Oklahoma State Game Notes
• The Basics
A pair of old conference rivals will square off when Oklahoma State takes on Texas A&M as a part of Saturday's Big 12/SEC Challenge. The Cowboys are visiting College Station, Texas for the first time since 2012 when the Aggies were playing their final Big 12 campaign. The Big 12 has dominated the annual showdown with SEC, posting a 4-1-1 mark with a 35-25 (.583) edge on the court. In fact, the only year the Challenge trophy resided in the SEC offices was in 2018. OSU, which is 4-2 in Challenge games, owns a 31-18 edge in the overall series against Texas A&M, but the Aggies have taken five of the last six meetings.
• On the Air
The Cowboys and Aggies will square off on ESPNU with Kevin Fitzgerald and Sean Farnham on the call. Tipoff is slated for 3 p.m. on Saturday, and the webcast can be seen on the WatchESPN app or ESPN.com. As always, Dave Hunziker and John Holcomb will have the Cowboy Radio Network call.
• 999 Career Points
On Jan. 6, Lindy Waters III became the 42nd Cowboy to join the 1,000-point club, and now Cameron McGriff is just a single point away from becoming the 43rd. McGriff, a veteran of 118 career games, sits at 999 points, and is playing some of his best basketball right now. Over the last two games, the senior is averaging 14.0 points, 7.0 rebounds and is shooting 54.4 percent from 3-point. Two OSU teammates have reached the 1,000-point mark in the same season on eight occasions, with the last coming in 2014 (Marcus Smart & Le'Bryan Nash).
• Target Practice Paying Off
Over the last week, Mike Boynton and the Cowboy coaching staff installed a series of "Target Practice" sessions into the OSU practice schedule, and they seem to be yielding results. In the last three games, OSU was a combined 26-of-64 (.406) from 3-point, including 10 makes in each of the last two games. In the three games prior to the "Target Practice" sessions, OSU was just 12-of-66 (.182) from deep. In the last three outings, Thomas Dziagwa is 10-of-21 (.476), Cameron McGriff is 6-of-13 (.462) and Lindy Waters III is 7-of-18 (.389) from 3-point.
• The Series With The Aggies
This will be the 50th meeting between Oklahoma State and Texas A&M, and marks OSU's first trip back to Reed Arena since the Aggies' last season in the Big 12 in 2011-12. Oklahoma State leads the overall series, 31-18, including an 11-10 edge in College Station. The Cowboys won 17 of the first 18 meetings after the two programs joined the newly formed Big 12 for the 1996-97 season, and OSU would enjoy a 23-10 overall record against the Aggiest as Big 12 foes over the next 15 seasons. The Aggies won the only matchup between the two programs since Texas A&M's departure to the SEC, taking the 2017 Legends Classic opener, 72-55, in Brooklyn, New York.
• Big 12/SEC Challenge
With a 4-1-1 record, the Big 12 has dominated the seventh-annual Big 12/SEC Challenge. Big 12 teams are 35-25 (.583) in the Challenge with wins in 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2019. The SEC's only victory came in 2018 after the leagues tied in 2017. Oklahoma State is 4-2 overall in the Challenge, including last year's 74-70 win over South Carolina in Stillwater.
• Against The Southeastern Conference
Oklahoma State brings a three-game win streak against the SEC into Saturday's Big 12/SEC Challenge showdown at Texas A&M. The Cowboys took down No. 19 LSU, 90-77, at the 2018 AdvoCare Invitational, followed by a 74-70 win over South Carolina in the 2019 SEC/Big 12 Challenge. In November, OSU took down Ole Miss, 78-37, in the championship game of the NIT Season Tip-Off. Overall, OSU is 127-128 (.498) all-time against the current membership of the SEC.
