Cowgirls Make Impressive Run In Freeman Memorial Invitational In Vegas

LAS VEGAS – Multiple Oklahoma State Cowgirls competed in the Freeman Memorial Invitational in Las Vegas, Nev. over the weekend. Two OSU doubles teams competed to the semifinals of the tournament, while one Cowgirl, No. 29 Bunyawi Thamchaiwat, made it to the finals of singles play.
Freshman Lenka Stara began singles play for the Cowgirls by defeating Connie Li of UNLV, 6-3, 6-7, 6-1. No. 92 Ayumi Miyamoto came out victorious over Anika Yalagadda of North Carolina in her first-round match, 2-6, 6-3, 7-6.
Catherine Gulihur defeated Izumi Asano of UNLV, 6-2, 7-5, to advance to the second round of the tournament. Dariya Detkovskaya was the final Cowgirl to win her first-round match, defeating Nilika Madurawe of Stanford, 5-7, 7-5, 6-3. Alana Wolfberg was the only Cowgirl to lose her first-round match falling to Nicole Mossmer of Stanford, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.
No. 16 Lisa Marie Rioux and No. 29 Thamchaiwat both received first-round byes in the tournament. Rioux fell to Kacie Harvey of UNC in her only singles match of the tournament, 6-3, 6-3. Thamchaiwat won her match over Sara Choy of Stanford, 3-6, 6-0, 7-6.
Miyamoto defeated Emma Higuchi of Stanford to advance to the quarterfinals, 6-2, 6-3. Detkovskaya would also find herself in the quarterfinals due to a walkover from No. 90 Daria Kuczer.
Catherine Gulihur and Lenka Stara both fell to their respective opponents in round two. Stara fell to No. 7 Michaela Gordon of Stanford, 6-1, 6-3, while Gulihur lost to Makenna Jones of UNC, 6-2, 6-2.
Thamchaiwat would become the only Cowgirl to win her quarterfinals match, as she defeated Makenna Jones, 6-4, 6-1. Detkovskaya lost to Kacie Harvey, 6-4, 6-0, and Miyamoto fell to Michaela Gordon, 6-0, 7-6.
Bunyawi Thamchaiwat would defeat Kacie Harvey in the semifinals, 6-4, 6-0. That would set up a finals matchup on Sunday between No. 7 Michaela Jones and No. 29 Bunyawi Thamchaiwat. Jones came out on top of a competitive match, winning the tournament, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2.
The Cowgirls made an impressive doubles run in the Freeman Memorial as well. Thamchaiwat and Stara took their first match easily with a 6-1 victory over Smith and Elliott of UNLV. Wolfberg and Detkovskaya advanced to the second round of the draw due to a walkover from Olsen and Kuczer of Pepperdine.
No. 17 Rioux and Miyamoto received a first-round by and went on to defeat Stanford's Madurawe and Mossmer, 7-6. Thamchaiwat and Stara also advanced to the semifinals of the doubles draw by defeating Gordon and Shin of Stanford, 6-1. Wolfberg and Detkovskaya lost their second-round match to Jones and Sanford of UNC, 6-2.
