The Program: An Award-Winning Tradition
September 20, 2019 | Cowboy Football
STILLWATER - As Oklahoma State football travels to Austin for its conference opener with the No. 12/13 Longhorns, it boasts an explosive offense with a pair of standouts leading the way, whose names are already being mentioned among potential award candidates.
The Cowboys rank No. 9 nationally in scoring offense, rushing offense and passing efficiency and rank No. 3 in third down conversion percentage. They also lead the nation with seven plays from scrimmage that have gone for 50 yards or more. The biggest reason for that offensive success comes from running back Chuba Hubbard and wide receiver Tylan Wallace.
Between the two, the Cowboys have the FBS leader in rushing yards, receiving yards, rushing touchdowns, receiving touchdowns, rushing yards per game, receiving yards per game, yards after contact (according to Pro Football Focus), yards after catch (PFF) and plays from scrimmage of at least 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80 and 90 yards. Hubbard and Wallace are two of the four leading touchdown scorers in the nation and have accounted for 13 of OSU's 20 total touchdowns this season (65%).
OSU football has 59 All-Americans to its credit, with 22 of those coming in the Mike Gundy era. The Cowboys look to add another pair in Hubbard and Wallace, with the potential for individual awards existing as well.
Since 2008, the Cowboys have produced three winners of the Biletnikoff Award, winners of the Ray Guy Award, the Lou Groza Award and a Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award winner. OSU boasts a Heisman winner in Barry Sanders, who also won the Maxwell Award and the Walter Camp Player of the Year awards in his historic 1988 season with the Pokes.Â
