Â
STILLWATER – Select Oklahoma State football players met with media Tuesday to discuss the team's upcoming conference-opener against No. 12 Texas this Saturday in Austin. Some of their comments:
Â
Cornerback A.J. Green
Â
On defending Texas'Â receivers:
"We have to be focused mentally, listen to Coach Knowles, listen to the game plan and apply it. We have to make sure everyone is on the same page."
Â
On the defense's chemistry:
"I feel like the defense has been playing with an edge. We have to turn it up a notch going into conference play, but we have to keep going hard."
Â
On the second half against Tulsa:
"I want to say that they are a good team, first of all. We knew that we were the better team and we could dominate them. Going into the second half, we wanted to show how dominant we can be."
Â
Running Back Chuba HubbardÂ
Â
On the team's previous success against Texas:
"We just had good game plans. We are a tough team. Obviously, Texas is very talented. We are fortunate to play them and have such great talent in the Big 12. We are just going to stick with what we do."
Â
On his practice routine:
"I just try to work hard and pay attention to the little things and the details. Last year, I think I did a good job with it but there are some things that I missed. This year, I am making sure that I don't miss anything and I leave everything on the table."
Â
On his workload in the last two games:
"I feel great. Obviously, you see guys like Tylan [Wallace] and all of the receivers out there running around trying to keep guys off of them, so I feel great."
Â
Quarterback Spencer Sanders
Â
On why OSU has had success against Texas recently:
"We keep it simple and we play hard instead of going complex and getting confused sometimes. We keep it simple, we work hard and we make sure we give it our all at the simple things. The simple things turned out to be big things."
Â
On playing through frustration against Tulsa:
"Overcoming adversity is in everybody's life. I'm sure everyone out here goes through adversity, so it matters how you face it. My mother always taught me that it's not how hard you get knocked down, it's about how well you get up."
Â
On what he has seen on Texas:
"I have seen a lot of stuff. They are a creative team, I'll give that to them. They have a lot of mixed coverages and mixed blitzes. They do just about everything you're going to see, but it doesn't bother us. We are going to play like we know how to play. We're going to execute and play hard. "
Â
Linebacker Amen Ogbongbemiga
Â
On how the second half of Tulsa will boost team into Texas:
"It shows us what we are capable of. We fell asleep that second quarter and we know we can't do that because that was the turning point of the game. As a unit, we came together at halftime and said, 'We know what we're doing, we just have to execute it and we did.' That's in the past now. We are over that game and fully moving on to Texas. We're coming together and putting a game plan in for them."
Â
On the linebackers' depth:
"Everybody who gets in, we trust them. I feel like they are all going to do well. Malcolm Rodriguez is beside me and he's a great tackler. It's just motivation. We all motivate each other to keep getting better every day. From here moving forward, hopefully we all stay healthy."
Â
On the defensive line's impact on him:
"It clears things up for me. I can see things faster and react faster. If they're doing their job, then it makes it easier for me. Everybody has to work together and it's starting to happen."
Â
Offensive Lineman Johnny Wilson
Â
On the success at Texas
"I think it's a mentality we have. It's a big game for us, but we don't think about it as a big game. Me, personally, I was always a huge Texas fan and then I came here. I want to prove that we can beat them."
Â
On the offensive line's performance at Tulsa:
"I think we did good. There was a point in the middle when we kind of lulled, but it's all about the drive. I know a bunch of the starters wanted to get our numbers up on our performance so we're just going to work hard this week and improve our scores."
Â
On helping quarterbacks stay calm after a bad play:
"Mason (Rudolph) would hold all that stuff in until he got to the sideline. Corn (Taylor Cornelius) would just move on to the next play. I tell Spencer Sanders to calm down and make sure he's OK. He just likes to play, he loves to go fast and sometimes he just needs to calm down. I'm there to tell him, 'Hey we got this! You don't need to be all riled up. We have another play to go.' I just make sure he's OK and ready to go for the next play."
Â
Defensive End Tyler Lacy
Â
On what being on the scout team did for him last year:
"Last year had me take a step back from football and it had me learn from the older guys and watch what they were doing to improve. I leaned on Jordan Brailford, Enoch Smith and Cole Walterscheid, actually, all of the older guys who graduated."
Â
On the motivation for the Texas game:
"The motivation is that it's just another game. We're going to go out there and take care of business."
Â
On the defense being inconsistent this year:
"Looking back on the Tulsa game, when we came up against them in the second half, we just had to come out strong so we could let our offense work. Having those turnovers from the offense, we really had to go out there and prove ourselves."
