Alan Bratton Named Palmer Cup Head Coach
August 28, 2019 | Cowboy Golf
NORMAN, Okla. – Oklahoma State's Alan Bratton and Duke's Dan Brooks will lead the United States side when it takes on the International squad at the 2020 Arnold Palmer Cup, which will be contested July 3-5 at Lahinch Golf Club in Ireland. The announcement was made today by the Golf Coaches Association of America.
Beginning his seventh season at the helm of his alma mater, Bratton has led the Cowboys to three consecutive top-five NCAA finishes, including the program's 11th national title in 2018. OSU has finished the past two seasons as the top-ranked program in the country.
Last year, OSU claimed six tournament titles while Matthew Wolff and Viktor Hovland swept the national player of the year honors. Wolff brought home the Jack Nicklaus Award and the Fred Haskins Award, while Hovland received the Ben Hogan Award.
Bratton was on the bag for Hovland in the summer of 2018, helping him become OSU's fifth U.S. Amateur champion. This past spring he caddied for Hovland on his way to Low Amateur status at The Masters as well as the U.S. Open this past summer.
After winning the national title in 2018, Bratton has now won titles as a head coach, assistant coach (2006) and player (1995).
The 2018 Cowboys matched the school record with 10 victories with Bratton being named the national coach of the year in the process.
Over the past two seasons, OSU has produced nine All-America selections.
In 2014, Bratton's first at the helm, the Cowboys tallied the program's 17th NCAA runner-up finish.
The Arnold Palmer Cup was co-founded in 1997 by Arnold Palmer and The Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA), with the inaugural event held at the Bay Hill Club & Lodge in Orlando. The event is a Ryder Cup-style tournament that pits the top university/college golfers from the United States against an International Team. Co-ed since 2018, it is one of the amateur game's premiere events and its only major tournament that features men and women playing side-by-side as partners.
Since its inception, over 125 former Arnold Palmer Cup alumni have gone on to earn cards on either the PGA Tour, European Tour or LPGA, 28 have represented Europe or the USA in the Ryder Cup or Presidents Cup, and more than 60 have claimed over 230 victories on the PGA or European Tours. The United States leads the series 12-10-1.
