Cowboys’ Run Comes To An End In NCAA Semifinals

CARLSBAD, Calif. – Oklahoma State's men's golf team saw its season draw to a close on Tuesday with ts loss to Auburn in the semifinal round of the NCAA Championship at Omni La Costa Resort and Spa.
OSU's third-place finish marks the seventh time the Cowboys have finished third at the event and the Cowboys have now tallied 59 top-five finishes at the national championship.
Auburn put its first point of the match on the board in the lead match with Logan Reilly taking down junior Eric Lee, 7&5.
The Tigers got point No. 2 courtesy of Josiah Gilbert, who defeated junior Ethan Fang, 4&3.
Cayden Pope clinched the match for Auburn with a 3-and-2 win over sophomore Filip Fahlberg-Johnsson.
Juniors Gaven Lane and Preston Stout were each trailing, 1 up, in their matches against Jake Albert and Jackson Koivun, respectively, and playing the 18th hole when play was halted.
The Cowboys advanced to the semifinal match at the par-72, 7,528-yard layout with a 3-2 win over Florida in their morning quarterfinal tilt.
In the lead match against the Gators, Lee was dominate in a 6-and-4 victory over Luke Poulter. After Poulter took the lead at the fourth, Lee tied the match two holes later. He would win Nos. 8-10 to grab a 3-up advantage. He would go on to win Nos. 12, 13 and 14 to close out the match.
In his match with Zack Swanwick, Fang held a 2-up lead with two to play before Swanwick won the 17th and 18th before closing the match with a birdie on the first extra hole.
Fahlberg-Johnsson led for the majority of the opening 11 holes of his match with Parker Sands. However, Sands won three in a row starting at the 12th and closed the match with a par at the 16th for a 3-and-2 victory.
Stout never trailed in his match with Matthew Kress, but never led by more than two. He won the first two holes, but Kress battled all day long to take the match the distance, After Stout won the 15th to go 2-up with three to play, Kress claimed No. 16 before the two players tied the final holes to give the individual NCAA medalist a 1-up victory.
Lane trailed in his match with Jack Turner before tying the match at the ninth. He would take the 10th and 11th for a 2-up lead and moved back to a 2-up lead with a win at the 15th on his way to a 2-and-1 win.
