Cowgirl Softball Posts Highest Ranking Since 1998
June 11, 2019 | Cowgirl Softball
STILLWATER – The Oklahoma State softball team finished the 2019 season with its highest ranking in 21 years, as the Cowgirls were slotted at No. 6 in both the USA Today/NFCA Coaches Poll and the ESPN.com/USA Softball Top 25, both of which were released Tuesday.
It is OSU's highest standing in the national polls since checking in at No. 4 in the final poll of the 1998 campaign.
The Cowgirls (45-17; 13-5 Big 12) made the program's eighth appearance in the Women's College World Series this season and won a program-best eight games during postseason play in 2019. Twenty-three of OSU's wins came against teams that were either ranked or receiving votes in at least one of the national polls, and 11 of them were triumphs over top-15 opponents.
During Super Regionals and the WCWS, OSU faced No. 4 Florida State three times on the road, No. 8 Florida, No. 1 Oklahoma and No. 2 Washington. The Pokes went 3-3 in those matchups, picking up two wins in Tallahassee to advance to Oklahoma City and besting the Gators to earn the program's first World Series win since 1998.
Oklahoma State has been ranked in at least one of the national polls in 27 of the last 29 weeks, with Tuesday's placement marking the Cowgirls' first top-10 residence since the final rankings of the 2011 season when OSU was slotted at No. 8.
The Pokes will lose their top two arms and three of their top four hitters to graduation heading into the 2019-2020 school year, but are expected to return six starters in the field, as well as a slew of talented players that have been eagerly awaiting their chance to crack the lineup.
