Cowgirls Falter Against Top-Seeded Oklahoma
June 01, 2019 | Cowgirl Softball
OKLAHOMA CITY – The No. 13 Oklahoma State softball team suffered its second defeat of the postseason, and first of the weekend, Friday, as the Cowgirls were bested by top-seeded Oklahoma, 6-1, in the winner's bracket game of the Women's College World Series.
OSU (45-16) is now 8-2 this postseason, with its only losses coming against No. 4 Florida State and the top-ranked Sooners.
Oklahoma put momentum in its favor quickly, as the Sooners opened the first inning with three runs on four hits. OSU responded in the home half of the inning, as Rylee Bayless drew a leadoff walk, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and came around to score on Michaela Richbourg's two-out single back up the middle.
Richbourg's RBI single was the only run the Cowgirls could muster off OU starter Giselle 'G' Juarez.
The game remained a tight contest after a fiery first inning until the top of the sixth inning, when the Cowgirls allowed three runs to score on two bases-loaded walks and a hit by pitch with the bags full.
Friday's contest was the sixth time that Bedlam has been contested during the NCAA Tournament, but the first time the two state programs have met during the WCWS. The game was played in front of 9,820 fans at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium, which is the largest crowd for any session in World Series history.
OSU will face the winner of the Washington-Minnesota matchup tomorrow night at 6 p.m. in the Cowgirls' second elimination game of the NCAA Tournament. The Pokes previously bested No. 4 Florida State, 3-2, in the Tallahassee Super Regional final while facing elimination.
First pitch is set for 6 p.m. CT on ESPN2.
