Oklahoma State Sets APR Record With Seven Perfect Scores
May 08, 2019 | General
STILLWATER – Oklahoma State set a school record with seven of its teams recording perfect single-year scores of 1,000 on the NCAA's Academic Progress Rate (APR), it was announced today. The previous record of six was set last year.
The perfect scores for the 2017-18 academic year were turned in by the men's cross country, men's golf, men's tennis, women's cross country, women's golf, softball and women's track and field programs.
For Cowboy golf, it marked the sixth straight year that the program achieved a perfect single-year APR and it was the 13th time in a possible 14 years that the reigning NCAA champions have accomplished that feat. The OSU women's golf program hit 1,000 for the third straight year and for the fifth time in the last seven years.
From a multi-year perspective (the combined APR of the last four academic years), the men's golf program is Oklahoma State's best with a perfect score of 1,000. Other standout performers with a multi-year APR of 980 or better include women's golf (992), men's cross country (991), soccer (990), women's track and field (988), women's cross country (987), softball (986), men's tennis (985) and football (982).
The football program's multi-year APR of 982 ranks second in the Big 12 and ties for 15th among all Power Five schools. It is the highest multi-year rate that OSU football has achieved since the NCAA started recording data in 2004-05. The program's multi-year APR increased from the previous year for the sixth straight year. From a single-year perspective, the football program's current score of 983 is its second-best performance since the APR was implemented, trailing only last year's perfect score of 1,000.
The men's cross country and women's golf programs set their respective records for multi-year APR, with men's cross country posting a 991 to eclipse its previous record of 989 from 2014-15 and women's golf posting a 992 to improve its previous best of 991 from both 2007-08 and 2008-09.
The APR holds institutions accountable for the academic progress of their student-athletes through a team-based metric that accounts for the eligibility and retention of each student-athlete for each academic term.
Teams must earn a four-year APR of 930 to compete in championships, and every team at Oklahoma State is comfortably above that marker.
An APR score of 980 or higher is considered outstanding and nine of Oklahoma State's 15 programs exceeded that single-year rate in 2017-18: men's cross country, men's golf, men's tennis, women's cross country, women's golf, softball and women's track and field, all of whom posted perfect scores of 1,000 - and also soccer (990) and football (983).
Eight OSU sports demonstrated a positive trend by either matching or surpassing their multi-year rate from 2016-17, with the biggest jump coming from men's tennis, who jumped 22 points from 963 to 985. The women's golf program improved 16 points and the football program improved 13 points from their multi-year tallies from a year ago. Other improvements were turned in by softball (six points), men's cross country (four points) and wrestling (one point). Improvement was not attainable for the men's golf program, which posted a perfect 1,000 multi-year score in 2016-17, then came back to do it again in 2017-18. The women's track and field program matched last year's multi-year APR by posting a 988 for the second straight year.
