Cowgirl Softball Holds Steady in Top 15
May 07, 2019 | Cowgirl Softball
STILLWATER – The Oklahoma State softball team suffered its first Big 12 series loss this past weekend, but the losses to top-ranked Oklahoma didn't sting much in the rankings, as the Cowgirls checked in at No. 14 in the USA Today/NFCA Coaches Poll and in the same spot in the ESPN.com/USA Softball Top 25.
Oklahoma State has been ranked in the top 20 of at least one of the national polls for 13 consecutive weeks, marking the longest such stretch by a Cowgirl squad since 2010. The Pokes have also been ranked in at least one of the national polls in 25 of the last 27 weeks.
The Cowgirls concluded the regular season with a 37-14 record - their most wins prior to postseason play since also winning 37 in 2011. OSU's 13 victories in Big 12 play also rank as the program's best mark since also winning 13 games back in 2003. It is tied for the fourth-highest single-season conference win total in school history.
The Pokes are coming off a gut-check weekend which saw them suffer a trio of defeats and the hands of their Bedlam rival, No. 1 Oklahoma. OSU has won 10 of its 12 Big 12 series since the start of the 2018 season, with the two losses both coming against the Sooners.
This week, coach Kenny Gajewski and Co. enter the Phillips 66 Big 12 Softball Championship as the No. 2 seed for the second-straight year.
OSU's reward for its No. 2 seed? A Friday doubleheader against No. 8 Texas and Iowa State, with a third opponent on Saturday to be determined by Friday's results. The Cowgirls will first face the Longhorns at 11 a.m., followed by the Cyclones at 5 p.m. Both games will air on Fox College Sports live from the ASA Hall of Fame Complex in Oklahoma City.
