FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Oklahoma State's men's golf team wrapped up the stroke play portion of the NCAA Championship in impressive fashion on Monday at Blessings Golf Club, finishing 31 shots clear of the field and producing its ninth NCAA medalist in Matthew Wolff in the process.
OSU's total just missed the NCAA Men's Golf Championship record for largest 72-hole margin, which was set by Wake Forest in 1975 (33 strokes).
The top-ranked Cowboys posted a 4-under 284 to finish at 16-under 1,136. Vanderbilt moved into second place at 1,167, while Wake Forest was third at 1,172. Texas and Oklahoma both finished at 1,180. Stanford grabbed the sixth spot at 1,189 and Texas A&M finished seventh at 1,192. SMU finished at 1,196 and won a playoff with Clemson to round out the teams advancing to match play.
"Proud of my team that we showed our depth and got contributions from all of our guys. Hayden Wood went out and shot 69 today, that was big, to have the first guy out post a good number. We wanted to close well, we obviously had built a big lead, but wanted to take pride in putting up another good score today to keep building momentum into match play," OSU head coach Alan Bratton said.
"Walking with Matt was a treat, it always is, he does some pretty awesome things. So certainly fun to have a front row seat for the show that he put on."
A sophomore, Wolff became OSU's ninth NCAA medalist and first since 2006 after firing a 3-under 69 to finish at 10-under-par 278. Wolff finished five shots clear of the field and joined a list of Cowboys which includes Earl Moeller (1953), Grier Jones (1968), David Edwards (1978), Scott Verplank (1986), Brian Watts (1987), E.J. Pfister (1988), Charles Howell (2000) and Jonathan Moore (2006).
Wolff began his day with four consecutive pars before tallying birdies at Nos. 5 and 6. After carding bogeys at Nos. 8 and 9 to move back to level par, Wolff went bogey-free on his inward nine. He carded birdies at Nos. 10, 15 and 17 to get to his 3-under score.
"Coming here this week, we have talked about it all year, winning the team championship. The individual championship is really nice, and obviously this is the biggest tournament I've won thus far in my career, but it is all about the team this week. I want to do all I can to help my team and get OSU another one," Wolff said.
Wolff has won six times during his sophomore campaign, an OSU single-season record.
Joining Wolff in the top 10 were senior Zach Bauchou and sophomore Austin Eckroat, who shared eighth place at 289 after carding rounds of 75 and 78, respectively.
Junior Viktor Hovland fired a 1-under 71 to move up 14 spots into a tie for 15th place at 292.
Wood, a senior, used a closing 69 to vault 31 spots into a tie for 30th place at 297.
The Cowboys will begin their quarterfinal match with SMU at 7:50 a.m. Live scoring is available at golfstat.com.
