Cowgirls Rally to Secure Regional Final Berth
May 17, 2019 | Cowgirl Softball
It was the 15th come-from-behind victory for OSU (41-14; 13-5 Big 12) this season, and their third in the Pokes' last four outings.
Oklahoma State opened Friday's contest in impressive fashion, scoring four runs over the first three innings to seize control of the game. The Cowgirls' four-run stretch was highlighted by a solo home run from Sydney Pennington in the top of the second, as the sophomore sent her 10th blast of the year over the left-field fence.
Pennington's solo shot made her the third Cowgirl to record 10 or more home runs so far in 2019. It is the only time in team history that the Pokes have had at least three players record double-digit home runs in a single season.
After the Cowgirls gave up eight runs in the third and fourth innings, they would use three more home runs over the last two frames to catapult themselves back in front and secure the program's 41st win this season.
Raquel Dominguez sparked the late OSU rally with a leadoff solo home run in the top of the sixth inning. It was Dominguez's third home run in her last three games, and those are the only three home runs of her career.
The sophomore's solo effort was the start of a five-run inning that put the Pokes back on top for good. Chyenne Factor provided the bookend effort of the sixth inning, as she hit a towering grand slam to left field - the first of her career- to make it a 10-8 game in OSU's favor.
Factor's eighth home run of her freshman season came on an 0-2 count with two outs in the inning.
Senior Samantha Show provided the fourth Cowgirl home run of the day in the top of the seventh, as she torpedoed a three-run shot to left field that sent the Cowgirl Stadium crowd into a frenzy and provided some breathing room for the defense.
Tulsa didn't go down easily, as the Golden Hurricane led off with a solo blast to left center in the home half of the seventh, but Logan Simunek retired the next three to cap the comeback win.
It was also a notable moment for the Cowgirls' ringleader, as the victory was Kenny Gajewski's 150th triumph as a head coach.
OSU is now one victory away from securing its first super-regional berth since 2011, when the Cowgirls made the program's seventh appearance in the Women's College World Series. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. CT on ESPN3.
