Cowgirls Place 10 on Academic All-Big 12 Team
May 02, 2019 | Cowgirl Softball
IRVING, Texas – The Oklahoma State softball program continued to be one of the Big 12's best in the classroom in 2018-19, and 10 Cowgirls were honored for their efforts with the announcement of the 2019 Academic All-Big 12 Softball Team Thursday afternoon.
OSU had eight first-team honorees, and two members slotted among the group of second-teamers. Senior Lauren Heintzelman was the highlight of the group, as she was one of six Big 12 student-athletes nominated with a 4.00 grade point average.
Thursday's announcement marks the fourth-straight year that the Cowgirls have had double-digit Academic All-Big 12 honorees. The four-year run aligns with coach Kenny Gajewski's four seasons in Stillwater, and are the four highest single-season totals in school history.
OSU previously had 10 players honored in 2016, 12 in 2017 and 10 in 2018.
Several prominent names dot the Academic All-Big 12 squad for OSU this year, highlighted by seniors Taylor Lynch and Madi Sue Montgomery, as well as junior Mackenzie Thomas
Thursday's unveiling marks the third-straight year that Lynch and Montgomery earned first-team honors, and it was the second time Thomas has been named a first-team Academic All-Big 12 selection.
The remaining seven Cowgirls all received the academic nod for the first time in their careers.
Chelsea Alexander, Lauren Heintzelman, Elise LeBeouf, Sydney Pennington and Michaela Richbourg all received first-team honors, while Rylee Bayless and Mallory Goodman were slotted with the second team.
Oklahoma State's 42 Academic All-Big 12 honorees over the past three seasons paces the Big 12. Iowa State is the Cowgirls' closest competitor with 37 selections in that time, and no one else has more than 35.
To earn a spot on the first-team Academic All-Big 12 squad, one must maintain a 3.20 or higher GPA either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 20 percent of their team's scheduled contests. Second-team selections hold a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
