TUCSON, Arizona— Ashton Hicks, Aaliyah Birmingham and Blake Scott put up marks to improve their regional qualifying positions on Saturday at the Jim Click Shootout in Roy P. Drachman Stadium.
Hicks finished second overall in the men's 400 meters. He ran a time of 45.84 to put himself at No. 2 in the West Region in the event. Hicks was second to only TCU's Derrick Mokaleng. His performance was alos the second-best in the event in school history.
The true freshman is following up an indoor season in which he was the Big 12's 400-meter runner-up and earned second team All-America honors.
Birmingham also finished as the runner-up in her race. She finished in second in the 100 meters with a time of 11.51. Birmingham was sitting at No. 15 in the West Region going into Saturday's competition, but improved her time by .04 seconds to move into 14th place.
Scott won the men's pole vault, as he cleared 5.21m/17-1 for a new season-best mark. The performance was Scott's third best in a Cowboy uniform. Scott didn't clear 5.21m/17-1 during the 2018 outdoor season until the Big 12 Championships.
Other standout performances came from Torrey Hickel in the men's shot put, the women's 4X400-meter relay team and the women's 4X100-meter relay team.
Hickel set a new outdoor personal best with a throw of 16.99m/55-9.
The Cowgirls' 4X400-meter relay squad ran a season-best time of 3:39.06, which is the third-fastest time in school history. Birmingham ran an unofficial split of 52.8 seconds, which would have placed her third in the individual 400 meters' race. The OSU women's 4X100-meter relay ran a time of 45.78. That performance is No. 4 in school history and the quickest since 1999.
Assistant coach Josh Langley said he was pleased with a lot of OSU's marks, but was also impressed with technical adjustments.
"In certain areas, we got a lot accomplished," Langley said. "Making the trip (to Arizona) was well worth it. There were a lot of technical and execution changes that will lead to big marks in the future."
