Cowgirls Complete Third Drake Relays Sweep
April 27, 2019 | Cowboy Cross Country & Track, Cowgirl Cross Country & Track
STILLWATER—The Oklahoma State women's distance squad completed a sweep of the distance relays at the Drake Relays as the men's and women's track and field teams wrapped up the weekend's competition Saturday.
The Cowgirls clinched the distance medley relay thanks to the 1,600-meter anchor leg from Molly Sughroue. The Cowgirls handed her the baton in second place, but Sughroue battled for the victory.
The senior raced against a competitive field that included Utah's Sarah Feeny who is No. 3 in the NCAA in the women's 1,500 meters this season, but Sughroue came out as the winner, beating second-place Utah by over two seconds.
The Cowgirls' DMR team won the race with a time of 11:15.18. The win capped off a dominant weekend that saw the OSU women win the 4X800, 4X1,600 and distance medley relays.
Director of Cross Country and Track and Field Dave Smith said the sweep is a testament to the depth OSU has in the women's distance group.
"They're competitive and it just shows that we have a lot of kids who can finish, which is important in these relays," Smith said. "Everybody ran well. Kaytlyn Larson has been struggling this season, but today she broke free. Molly Sughroue's anchor leg was great considering competition and conditions."
The women's distance relays have been swept six times in the history of the Drake Relays and the Cowgirls take claim to three of those six sweeps. The Cowgirls also finished the weekend undefeated, winning all three all of their races in Des Moines, Iowa.
The Cowgirls have not lost a distance relay at the Drake Relays in their past three appearances at the event (2015, 2017, 2019).
The Cowboys finished in the top five in a loaded distance medley relay field, completing the race in 9:52.56 to finish fifth. The OSU men came away victorious in Friday's 4X1,600-meter relay as well.
Ryan Roane jumped a personal best at the National Relay Championships' women's triple jump. She jumped 12.66m/41-6.5 to move into No. 7 on OSU's performance list.
The OSU track and field teams return to action Friday at the Arkansas Twilight in Fayetteville, Arkansas, to wrap up the regular season.
