Cowgirls Come From Behind to Top No. 13 Texas Tech
April 26, 2019 | Cowgirl Softball
STILLWATER – The No. 12 Oklahoma State softball team pushed its winning streak to double digits Friday night with a 3-2 come-from-behind win over No. 13 Texas Tech at Cowgirl Stadium.
The Pokes' 10-game winning streak is tied for the team's longest of the season, and Friday marked the 10th time that OSU (35-11; 11-2 Big 12) has come from behind to win in 2019. It was also the Cowgirls' 17th win this season against a team either ranked or receiving votes in one of the national polls.
"I think this just tells you where our program is at, with the strength and the foundation that we have," coach Kenny Gajewski said. "I've got a really good coaching staff that came in here and handled their deal just fine, but more importantly our kids, and they way they handled the ups and downs of these conference games. I tried to preface them this week about staying in check, and we did that. I'm proud of them."
Samantha Show led the line for Oklahoma State Friday night, as she put in one of the best shifts of her Cowgirl career in the circle, and sparked the offense's comeback effort.
Show struggled a bit to start the weekend series, allowing two runs to cross in the top of the first. After that, however, it was a lights-out performance from the right-hander. Over the final six innings, Show allowed only two base hits and she finished the day with five strikeouts and no walks.
Friday marked the senior's 14th complete game this season, and in 13 of those outings she has allowed no more than two earned runs.
At the plate, Show was again the match needed to light OSU's flame, as she crushed a two-run home run over the left-field wall, tying the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the third. It was Show's 14th home run of the season, bringing her within one of tying the program's single-season record.
Her home run did set one record though, as it was the 62nd long ball hit by a Cowgirl this season, tying the 2019 team with the 2018 Pokes for the program's single-season record. The 2018 and 2019 seasons are the only 60-homer years in school history.
While Show's home run was an impressive feat for its theatrics and record-shifting effect, it was Madi Sue Montgomery, who followed Show in the lineup, that delivered the final blow.
Montgomery's effort wasn't as flashy as her fellow senior, but it was just as important, as she drew a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the fourth inning to put the Cowgirls on top for the first and last time Friday, 3-2. It was Montgomery's 197th career RBI, bringing her within three of becoming the sixth player in Big 12 history to join the 200-RBI club.
Oklahoma State also got a solid effort from freshman Kiley Naomi, who made several key defensive plays, including turning a 6-3 double play to get out of the second inning. It was Naomi's 12th double play turned this season, which is tops among the Cowgirls and an OSU freshman record.
The Pokes will get their first crack at clinching their fifth-straight Big 12 series on Saturday at Cowgirl Stadium. First pitch is set for 4 p.m. CT on Fox Sports Oklahoma.
