McGriff Spending Summer Getting Out Of His Comfort Zone
April 27, 2019 | Cowboy Basketball
Cameron McGriff spent the summer of 2018 working. He worked on his jumper. He worked on his ball-handling. He worked on 3-point shot.
He hoisted up countless reps in Gallagher-Iba Arena before class, and then came right back each afternoon to lift weights and participate in individual skill sessions with his Cowboy teammates and coaches.
This was McGriff's routine day after day, but the fuel behind it was not individual glory. He worked because he knew his team needed him to step into a bigger role as a captain and leader.
"I want my weaknesses to become better weaknesses," McGriff said. "I'm always trying to become more comfortable on the perimeter, so I want to go through more and more workouts that put me in uncomfortable situations."
A summer of uncomfortable situations helped McGriff weather his first season atop every opponent's scouting report. The junior led the Cowboys in scoring and rebounding, pulling down more boards than any OSU player since Marshall Moses in 2010, and he even earned All-Big 12 Conference honorable mention honors.
Now, with 100 career appearances under his belt and the 1,000-career point plateau right around the corner, McGriff is back in the gym working. The soon-to-be senior is working on his jumper. He's working on his ball-handling and his 3-point shot.
He's getting uncomfortable all over again because this summer he and the Cowboy veterans have a young and talented group of freshmen to bring up to speed. Once again, he'll be asked to step into bigger role in the nation's toughest basketball conference, the Big 12.
"It drives me to know that I have a lot of responsibility on this team," McGriff said. "This will be my second go-around as a captain, so there's a lot that I've learned that I can better at this offseason. I'm probably my biggest critic, so I'm never going to be satisfied"
In June, McGriff and the other Cowboy veterans will welcome one of the nation's top-20 recruiting classes, and it's up to them to set the standards. McGriff doesn't shy away from the fact that progress isn't made in comfort zones.
"The group of guys that we have coming back are going to hit the ground running, and we're going to bring those new guys along with us. I love watching freshmen make that turn, and it's fun to help them develop."
