STILLWATER – Andrew Navigato's RBI single in the ninth inning gave Oklahoma State an 11-10 win and a series sweep of 19th-ranked Texas in front of 4,637 fans Saturday at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.
With the sweep, OSU improved to 25-13 overall and moved to the top of the Big 12 standings with a 10-5 conference mark. Texas has now lost five of its last six Big 12 games and falls to 24-18 overall and 5-9 in league play.
The 4,637 fans marked the third-largest crowd in the history of Allie P. Reynolds Stadium and is the largest non-NCAA Tournament crowd to ever watch the Cowboys on their home field. Reynolds Stadium is in its 39th and final season as the home of OSU baseball.
Navigato's walk-off hit capped a big night for the junior as he went 3-for-4 with three RBIs at the plate. Carson McCusker also drove in three runs, while Colin Simpson was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs.
Logan Gragg earned the win on the mound to improve to 2-3 as he held Texas to just one run over the final 2 2/3 innings.
The game was tight throughout.
Texas got on the board in the top of the first inning against OSU righty Brett Standlee on a two-out, two-RBI double from Zach Zubia as the Longhorns took their first lead of the series.
Simpson answered for OSU in the bottom of the frame with a double down the right-field line that brought home Hueston Morrill all the way from first to make the score 2-1, and the Cowboys tied things up at 2-2 in the third on an RBI by McCusker.
Texas would briefly take a 3-2 lead in the top of the fourth, but OSU answered right back in the bottom half of the inning. With two outs, Cade Cabbiness lined a single to right field then stole second base to move into scoring position for Morrill. The Cowboy freshman then laced a double down the left-field line to tie the game at 3-3.
Peyton Battenfield entered the game to pitch for OSU in the fifth and threw a scoreless frame before giving up a single and a walk to begin the sixth and handing the ball off to Brady Basso. Basso issued a walk to load the bases and induced a ground ball for an RBI groundout for the first out of the inning as Texas took a 4-3 lead.
Jake Lyons was next out of the bullpen for the Pokes, inheriting two runners in scoring position with just one out. Lyons got a ground ball for the second out of the inning, but the Longhorn lead grew to 5-3 as a run came in to score on the play.
Once again, OSU answered, this time in a big way as the Pokes sent 11 batters to the plate in the sixth and rallied for six runs. Four walks and a hit batter helped the Cowboys' cause, and back-to-back, two-RBI hits by Navigato and McCusker snapped a 5-5 tie and gave the home team a 9-5 lead.
With Lyons still on the mound in the seventh, a two-run home run by UT's Tate Shaw made it a two-run game. Gragg came on in relief after Lyons gave up a single and issued a walk, but an RBI single and a sacrifice fly tied the score for the fourth time on the day.
The game remained knotted at 9-9 until the top of the ninth when Texas outfielder Austin Todd delivered a sac fly to right field that allowed Duke Ellis to score the go-ahead run.
With OSU trailing 10-9 and down to its final three outs, Jake Taylor led off the bottom of the ninth with a single, and Noah Sifrit came in to replace him as a pinch runner. Sifrit stole second before advancing to third on a wild pitch. Christian Funk then put together a great, nine-pitch at-bat to draw a walk and load the bases with just one out for Simpson. A wild pitch with two strikes on Simpson allowed Sifrit to come home with the tying run before Simpson worked his way back in the count to draw a walk.
All of this set Navigato up to play hero for the Cowboys, and with the bases loaded, he delivered with a deep fly ball over the head of Ellis in center field to plate Morrill with the winning run.
OSU concludes its five-game homestand Tuesday against Oral Roberts, with first pitch scheduled for 6:05 p.m.
