STILLWATER – Oklahoma State's winning streak reached three Friday night as the Cowboys cruised to their second-straight victory over 19th-ranked Texas by a 10-2 score to clinch a series win at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.
The Cowboys' three-game win streak moves them to 24-13 overall and 9-5 in Big 12 Conference play, while Texas falls to 24-17 and 5-8 in the league. OSU has outscored the Longhorns 25-2 in the series, and the Cowboys kept the visitors off the scoreboard over the first 17 2/3 innings of the weekend.
In his second start of the season, Parker Scott was dominant, working a career-high seven shutout innings and tying a career-best with eight strikeouts to improve to 2-0 on the season.
Carson McCusker also had a big night for the Pokes in his second start since returning to the OSU lineup after missing nine games due to illness. The junior was 4-for-5 at the plate and racked up a career-high six RBIs while finishing just a triple short of the cycle.
Scott got off to a quick start, striking out three Longhorns in the first inning, and the OSU offense put the Cowboys up for good in the bottom of the inning.
In that frame, McCusker started his big night off by coming up with a clutch two-out, two-RBI double off the right field wall to score Christian Funk and Hueston Morrill and give the Cowboys an early 2-0 lead.
In the fifth, Andrew Navigato drew a one-out walk to bring up McCusker, who lined his second hit of the game into left-center field. Up next, Trevor Boone fouled off several pitches before hitting a shallow fly ball to right field; Navigato tagged up and raced home to narrowly beat the tag with a head-first slide to push the lead to 3-0.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Cowboys added five runs on two home runs. First, Morrill put a charge into an opposite-field blast that carried over the right-field wall for the Cowboy freshman's first-career home run, a solo shot that extended OSU's lead to four.
Following Morrill's round tripper, Funk, Colin Simpson and Navigato all reached via walk to load the bases for McCusker, who doubled the OSU lead with an opposite-field grand slam.
Cade Cabbiness brought home two more runs for the Cowboys in the bottom of the eighth, making it a 10-0 OSU lead with a two-out single.
Ben Leeper came on in relief of Scott in the eighth and finished the game for OSU, giving up two runs on three walks and two hits.
The two teams will be back in action at Allie P. for the series finale on Saturday with first pitch slated for 3 p.m.
