WICHITA, Kan. – Oklahoma State used nine pitchers and got an RBI single from Noah Sifrit to complete a season sweep of Wichita State with a 1-0 win Wednesday night at Eck Stadium.
With the win, the Cowboys improved to 20-11 on the season, with a pair of midweek triumphs against WSU (18-15). OSU is now 8-3 against the Shockers under head coach Josh Holliday.
The shutout was the third of the season for the Cowboys. Mitchell Stone had the longest outing of the OSU pitchers to earn the win as the southpaw worked two innings and posted a strikeout and a walk, while Logan Gragg kept the Shockers off the scoreboard in the ninth to notch his first-career save.
Sifrit's RBI single was one of four hits for the Cowboys on the night and came in the fifth inning.
"I don't know if I've ever seen a game where that many kids have pitched and that many kids have gone out and done such a good job on a difficult night to pitch with the wind blowing hard from the moment we walked in," Holliday said. "For this game to end up 1-0, I wouldn't have bet on that, that's for sure. Not much to say on offense, but we played very good defense and found a way to shut them down."
The Cowboys got two of their hits in the decisive fifth. Cade Cabbiness led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on an error by the WSU center fielder. Following a groundout by Jake Taylor that moved Cabbiness to third, Sifrit stepped to the plate and delivered an RBI single through the left side past a drawn in Shockers' infield to put the visitors up 1-0.
OSU hurlers worked out of several jams in the late innings to maintain the slim lead.
In the sixth, John Kelly issued a leadoff double before a hit by pitch and sacrifice bunt put two Shockers in scoring position with one out. But the freshman escaped, getting a ground ball to third baseman Christian Funk, who fired home to get the out at the plate, before an inning-ending strikeout.
The next inning saw Tanner Sparks come out of the bullpen and promptly give a walk and a double to again put WSU runners in scoring position, this time with no outs. That brought Peyton Battenfield to the mound, and the right retired three in a row to keep the home team off the scoreboard.
OSU's Houdini act continued in the eighth. After WSU greeted Jake Lyons with a double and a single to put runners on the corners with no outs, Colin Simpson gunned down the runner trying to steal second for the first out. Lyons then recorded a strikeout before getting a pop up to end the inning and strand a runner on third.
Wichita State put the tying run on in the ninth with a two-out single, but Gragg struck out Alex Jackson to seal the win.
OSU returns to Big 12 Conference action Friday at Kansas. First pitch for Friday's opener has been rescheduled for 3 p.m. due to the potential for cold weather.
