LAWRENCE, Kan. – Oklahoma State smashed a program and Big 12 Conference record 12 home runs Friday against Kansas en route to a 27-6 win in the series opener at Hoglund Ballpark.
The Cowboys plated runs in all nine innings, capping the day with a seven-run ninth, as they improved to 21-11 overall and 7-3 in Big 12 Conference play. KU is now 17-16 and 2-8 in the league.
OSU's 27 runs were its most ever in a Big 12 game, surpassing the 23 they scored against Kansas State on March 7, 1997. It also marked the most runs in a conference game for the Cowboys since they had 28 at Iowa State in a Big Eight Conference affair on April 16, 1995.
Additionally, the 27 runs by the Cowboys were the most in a Big 12 game since Oklahoma had 29 against Kansas State during the 2009 season.
The 12 home runs bested a 20-year-old school record as OSU's previous mark was 11 homers against Chicago State on Feb. 24, 1999 in Stillwater, which was also the only other time the Cowboys have reached double figures in a contest.
The 12 homers also tied OSU with Belmont for the fourth most in a single game in NCAA history; BU had 12 in a game against UT Martin in 2015. Georgia Southern owns the record with 14 against Columbia in 2008, while Alabama (1999) and Cal State Northridge (1996) each had 13 in a game.
Adding to the historic day, both Christian Funk and Trevor Boone tied the OSU record for home runs in a game with three. The feat has now been accomplished 16 times by 13 different players in program history.
Boone's three-homer day marked the second time in his career to go deep three times as he also did it last season against Baylor. He is one of only three Cowboys, along with Adam Carr and Roy York, to have a pair of three-home run games in a career.
Funk and Boone were among the seven different Cowboys who homered in the win. Alix Garcia had two homers, while Colin Simpson, Andrew Navigato, Bryce Carter and Cade Cabbiness also left the yard.
The power surge helped OSU starter Jensen Elliott pick up the win as he improved to 4-2 with a six-inning outing. Nate Peterson worked the final three innings and kept the Jayhawks off the scoreboard while striking out four to earn his first-career save.
OSU jumped out to an early lead as it sent seven batters to the plate in the first inning. Hueston Morrill led off the game with a single and following a double by Funk, an RBI groundout off the bat of Simpson made the score 1-0. Three batters later, the Cowboys doubled their lead on a double by Boone.
The Jayhawks erased the OSU lead in their first at bat, getting a pair of runs on two hits against Elliott, but the Cowboys jumped back on top via the long ball in the second.
Garcia led off the second with his fourth home run of the season to left-center field and three batters later, Funk crushed a Ryan Cyr offering 427 feet over the 25-foot wall in center field for his fourth round tripper and a 4-2 OSU lead.
The home run derby continued in the third. This time it was a two-run blast by Cabbiness that got things started, with the opposite-field shot giving the Cowboys a 6-2 advantage. An RBI single by Morrill made the score 7-2 before Funk stepped to plate and ripped his second homer of the day, once again over the wall in center, to extend the OSU lead to 10-2.
The fourth inning was more of the same as Boone joined in the power surge with his seventh home run of the season before Garcia homered for the second time on the day. Both were solo shots as OSU pushed its lead to 12-2.
Navigato added his name to the home run column in the fifth, with his two-run bomb giving the Cowboys a 14-2 lead.
Boone's second homer of the day came in the sixth, and in the seventh, Carter smacked his first home run in an OSU uniform with a three-run, opposite-field shot.
Funk's record-tying third bomb came in the eighth; he had a chance to set the OSU record in the ninth but was hit by a pitch.
Long balls by Simpson and Boone provided all seven OSU runs in the ninth as Simpson blasted a grand slam before Boone notched his third round tripper with a three-run shot.
The two teams return to action Saturday at 2 p.m.
