STILLWATER – The Cowgirl tennis team's 10-match win streak was snapped Sunday afternoon in a 5-2 loss to the sixth-ranked Texas Longhorns at the Greenwood Tennis Center. It marks Oklahoma State's first Big 12 loss this season and the first since their Feb. 10 match against South Carolina.Â
Â
"Credit to them," said coach Chris Young. "They made a lot of hustle plays and won a lot of the deuce points. It really came down to the big points. They won the majority of them in crucial situations. The big key was doubles. We let the doubles point slip away, and we were playing from behind."
Â
The Cowgirls pushed Texas throughout the match beginning with doubles where No. 17 Sofia Blanco and Catherine Gulihur defeated Petra Granic and Tijana Spasojevic, 6-2. Bunyawi Thamchaiwat and Tamara Arnold lost only their second doubles match of the season, 6-4, to UT's Fernanda Labrana and Bojana Markovic. Cowgirls Marina Guinart and Katarina Stresnakova came up short in the tiebreaker against Anna and Bianca Turati, 7-6(6).Â
Â
Guinart dominated her singles match with a 6-2, 6-0 win against the Longhorns' Labrana to begin solo play. Sofia Blanco finished next on Court 5, taking her bout from Markovic, 6-3, 6-3.Â
Â
Lisa Marie Rioux took her match with A. Turati to the wire in a back-and-forth bout that ultimately ended in a second set tiebreak, 6-4, 7-6(4). Thamchaiwat's match ended almost simultaneously in a super tiebreak set with No. 52 Granic. The Cowgirl came up just short, dropping the bout, 6-4, 2-6, 7-6(2).Â
Â
Arnold lost her singles match to Katie Poluta, 6-4, 6-2, and with an identical score, Stresnakova dropped her bout with No. 42 B. Turati.Â
Â
""We were out here for about four hours," Young said. "It was a great college match. I thought both teams competed extremely hard. We fought to the very end and fought off several overall match points."Â
Â
The Cowgirls (14-5, 5-1 Big 12) have a nonconference match with UCF scheduled for 5 p.m. on Friday, April 5 before a Bedlam showdown on Sunday at 1 p.m.Â
