STILLWATER – Oklahoma State's second-seeded equestrian team was defeated by Baylor via tiebreaker during the third round of the Big 12 Championship on Saturday inside Totusek Arena.
With the final round of the competition tied at 10 apiece, the tie-breaking procedure was brought into effect. The raw scores of the meet were totaled and Baylor prevailed, 2855-2635.
The Cowgirls fell behind 2-0, but then reeled off five-straight victories in as many matchups. OSU took Equitation Over Fences, 3-2. Sydnie Ziegler, Abigail Brayman and Hannah Janson notched the final three points in the event.
In Horsemanship, Harley Huff and Sarah Miller put the Cowgirls up 5-2 and completed the quintet of consecutive wins. The Bears then rallied to take Horsemanship and tie the meet, 5-5, at the halfway point.
The meet resumed with Reining and OSU's No. 1 Reining squad was narrowly defeated, 3-2, bringing the meet score to 8-7 in favor of Baylor.
Hannah Lovrien and Stephanie Helsen provided the pair of victories for the Cowgirls.
Lovrien, a freshman, has performed her best during the biggest meets of the season, going 2-0 at the Big 12 Championship and picking up wins at No. 1 Auburn and at then-No. 5 Baylor.
Helsen has won her last seven matchups, playing a key role in OSU's Reining team being ranked first in the country.
Equitation on the Flat saw the Cowgirls take three of the five matchups, tying the meet, 10-10. Brayman, Katie Schell and Katie Pelzel were victorious, 170-148, 159-157 and 143-120, respectively.
On the Flat, Schell has won nine of her last 10 competitions. Pelzel has emerged a winner in six of her last seven matchups on the Flat.
Brayman is 8-0 in Big 12 Championships, going 4-0 in both Fences and Flat.
"She has so much talent," OSU head coach Larry Sanchez said. "I believe there's even more talent in there that's going to show itself over the next couple of years and even in the next couple of weeks."
The Cowgirls will compete at the NCEA Championships in Waco, Texas, on April 17. OSU is seeking its first NCEA title since 2006.
