Cowgirl Equestrian Starts Strong at Big 12 Championship

STILLWATER – The second-seeded Oklahoma State equestrian team began the second round of the Big 12 Championships with a 9-1 start through two events against TCU on Friday at Totusek Arena.
The Cowgirls swept Equitation on the Flat, 5-0, thanks to victories from Katie Pelzel, Sydnie Ziegler, Abigail Brayman, Hannah Janson and Katie Schell. The freshman duo of Pelzel and Ziegler opened scoring for the Cowgirls.
Janson, a junior, recorded the highest score in the event, defeating TCU's Janelle Henningsen, 164-0.
OSU's Reining team, which entered the day ranked No. 1 nationally, showed its mettle in a 4-1 victory. Stephanie Helsen, Hannah Mitchell, Kristi Wiggins and Hannah Lovrien all won their matchups.
Competing at her first Big 12 Championship, Lovrien scored an event-high 140. Along with Janson, Mitchell is competing in her third Big 12 Championship, holding a 4-1 record after the victory today.
OSU resumes the second round against TCU with Equitation Over Fences and Horsemanship at 10 a.m. Saturday morning. Shortly after the meet with TCU, the Cowgirls will face Baylor to complete the round robin tournament.
