Smith Calling Cowgirls' Saturday Night Showdown With Texas
March 26, 2019 | Cowgirl Softball
STILLWATER - Oklahoma State softball legend and ESPN analyst Michele Smith, alongside play-by-play man Mark Neely, will be on the call for OSU's matchup against Texas Saturday night on ESPN2.
During her four-year Cowgirl career (1986-89), Smith was selected to the All-Big Eight team three times, the All-Region team twice and the Big Eight All-Tournament team three times, including in 1989 when she was named the tournament's most valuable player. Smith also earned first-team All-America honors in both 1988 and 1989, was a member of the 1989 Women's College World Series team that tied for third place and was named to the all-WCWS team that year.
As a pitcher and designated player, Smith has left her name among the best in Cowgirl softball history.
She has thrown the most no-hitters in school history with nine, two of which were perfect games. Smith also owns the school record for career victories with 82, is tied for second in career triples with 10, and is second in shutouts with 46.

After her record-setting career as a Cowgirl, Smith went on to play for Team USA and played professionally in Japan. She twice competed in the Olympic Games, winning a gold medal with the United States National Team during the 1996 Atlanta games and the 2000 Sydney games. Smith also captured three gold medals in the World Championships (1994, 1998, 2002) while with Team USA.
During her professional career, Smith won eight Japan League championships with Toyota Shokki, while also being named the league's most valuable player on eight occasions.
Smith was named the United States Olympic Committee and American Softball Association Sportswoman of the Year in both 1990 and 1994. The Califon, New Jersey native was inducted into the ASA Hall of Fame in 2006, the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame in 2010 and most recently the Oklahoma State University Alumni Hall of Fame in 2011.
She graduated from Oklahoma State in 1990 with a bachelor's degree in health & wellness.
This Saturday she returns to her old stomping grounds once again as part of ESPN's broadcast team. First pitch against the Longhorns is set for 7:30 p.m. CT.
