STILLWATER – Max Hewitt's walk-off single lifted Oklahoma State to a 6-5 non-conference win over 19th-ranked Oklahoma Tuesday night in the final Bedlam game at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.
With two outs in the bottom of the ninth, Hewitt ripped a base hit up the middle to plate Noah Sifrit with the winning run as the Cowboys captured their fourth-straight victory and improved to 16-7.
OSU has now won eight consecutive games against the Sooners and is 21-6 against its rival under head coach Josh Holliday.
Ben Leeper worked a scoreless ninth on the mound to improve to 2-0, while Jake Taylor tied a career high with three hits and Alix Garcia drove in three runs.
The Cowboys jumped out to a big early lead with a five-run second inning. Bryce Carter led off with a single, and a one-out double by Taylor brought home OSU's first run.
Up next, Carson McCusker made it 2-0 with an RBI single and following a Cade Cabbiness walk, Garcia blasted a three-run home run to left-center field, his second round tripper of the season.
With the big lead, OSU starter C.J. Varela kept the OU hitters in check. After holding the Sooners without a hit over the first 3 2/3 innings, a two-run home run by Conor McKenna cut the Cowboys' lead to 5-2 in the fourth.
But that was the only damage done against Varela as the right-hander racked up a career-high seven strikeouts and allowed just the one hit over six innings of work.
OSU held the 5-2 lead until the eighth when the Sooners took advantage of three errors by the Cowboys to tie the score with three unearned runs.
With OU threatening to take the lead with runners on first and second, OSU finally got out of the inning when they caught McKenna stealing to keep the score tied at 5-5.
In the decisive ninth, Taylor got things started with a one-out single; Sifrit pinch ran and promptly stole second to move into scoring position. After McCusker walked, Cabbiness reached on a fielder's choice to put Cowboys on the corners with two away.
That's when Hewitt came through as he delivered the game-winning hit against OU closer Jason Ruffcorn to set off an OSU celebration.
The Cowboys return to Big 12 Conference action Friday when they travel to Fort Worth, Texas, to take on TCU. Friday's opener is set for 6:30 p. m.
