Cowgirls Prominent In Latest NCEA Event Rankings
March 21, 2019 | Cowgirl Equestrian
WACO, Texas — The National Collegiate Equestrian Association announced Tuesday the latest set of NCEA Event Rankings for collegiate equestrian as determined by the NCEA Selection Committee.
Oklahoma State's Reining team claimed the top spot for its respective event after posting an 8-3 regular-season record. Stephanie Helsen (8-3) has won seven of her past eight Reining matchups for the Cowgirls.
OSU's Horsemanship team moved up three spots to No. 3 after going 4-0 since the last set of rankings; it hasn't lost an event since traveling to Georgia last October.
Harley Huff, an All-American as a freshman for the Cowgirls last season, leads the Horsemanship team with eight wins.
On the Hunter Seat side, both the Flat and Fences teams are ranked seventh. Three Cowgirls — Abigail Brayman, Sydnie Ziegler and Hannah Janson — have six wins on the season.
Katie Pelzel paces the Flat team with a 4-1 record since being inserted into the starting lineup at Baylor in February.
The 2019 NCEA National Championship format includes four event titles, with those determined through a head-to-head bracket format in each of the four events that comprise a head-to-head, in-season meet. The event rankings are determined by the NCEA Selection Committee and are released to the National Championship; the final set of rankings on April 1 will be used to seed teams for the NCEA National Championship event title competitions, which begin April 17 in Waco, Texas.
Event rankings are determined at each head-to-head competition based on a variety of data points (win/loss; home/away; current rank of opponent). The event rankings may differ from the NCEA Team Rankings that are released every week throughout the season as they are based solely on the results from the single event in the head-to-head meet.
