Cowboy Wrestling Arrives in Pittsburgh for NCAA Championships

PITTSBURGH, Pa. –Nine members of the Oklahoma State wrestling team arrived in Pittsburgh on Monday evening to begin preparation for the 2019 NCAA Championships, which are set to begin Thursday, March 21 and conclude Saturday, March 23 at PPG Paints Arena.Â

OSU has two top-seeded wrestlers in their respective brackets and six earning top-10 placements. It marks the first time since 2006 the Cowboys have positioned four wrestlers in the top three and second time in four seasons they have claimed two No. 1 seeds.Â

Tournament Schedule
The NCAA Championships are divided into six sessions over three days of competition. Thursday's slate begins at 11 a.m. CST., with Friday and Saturday's action starting at 10 a.m. Below is a look at the full schedule.Â

This week, the No. 2 Cowboys have nine wrestlers ranked in Intermat's Top-20 and own the top spot at 133 pounds. Daton Fix took the lead in his weight class after claiming his first Big 12 title.Altogether, six Cowboys landed in the top 10. Nick Piccininni comes in at No. 2 again in this week's Intermat polls after winning his third-straight Big 12 Championship. Derek White also clinched a Big 12 title and dominated the competition with three major decisions and a technical fall in the finals but dropped to No. 3 in this week's polls. Kaden Gfeller comes in at No. 7 again at 149 pounds this week after becoming the conference meet. Jacobe Smith, at 174 pounds, comes in this week at No. 6, and Kaid Brock moves to No. 11 in the 141-pound ranks. Joe Smith enters the 165-pound rankings for the first time this season at No. 13 following his debut at the weight less than a week ago. Preston Weigel claimed a third Big 12 title, defeating No. 6 Willie Miklus in the finals via major decision and moved to the No. 3 197-pound spot.Â

Coach John Smith has led the Cowboys to five NCAA titles and has coached 32 NCAA individual champions along with 129 All-Americans since taking over the program in 1991-92. His 32 champs and 129 All-Americans lead all active coaches.Â
