OXFORD, Miss. – The No. 18 Oklahoma State softball team extended its winning streak to 10 games with an 8-0 win over Samford Saturday at the Ole Miss Softball Complex, but had the winning run snapped in the doubleheader's nightcap after falling to Ole Miss, 8-4, on the Rebels' home turf.
The 10-game winning streak was the second longest for OSU (20-6; 0-0 Big 12) during Kenny Gajewski's tenure as head coach, trailing only a 12-game unbeaten stretch in March last year.
"In the first game, we played OK - shut them out, had some big hits - but I just didn't like our energy all day," Gajewski said. "When you don't play with passion and energy and you just don't fight, things catch you. It caught us in that second game. I'm disappointed with the way we coached. We didn't prepare our kids. We're going to go inside (tonight) and work to figure out what we can do to help them. We'll get that done, jump out here tomorrow and have a nice day."
In the opener, Oklahoma State got onto the scoreboard quickly against Samford, as Madi Sue Montgomery drove home Rylee Bayless from third base with a sacrifice fly to right field. It was Montgomery's 11th career sacrifice fly, bringing her within one of tying Alysia Hamilton's OSU career record.
Montgomery finished with two runs batted in during Saturday's opener. Her second run-producing effort came in the bottom of the third when she singled back up the middle to again score Bayless and push the Cowgirls' advantage to 2-0.
The RBI single was a milestone moment for the senior, as it marked her 200th career hit. Montgomery is just the 10th player in school history to record at least 200 hits.
Immediately following Montgomery, freshman Chyenne Factor cleared the bases with a towering three-run home run to left field. Factor went 2-for-4 with her three-run effort and added a second three-run home run in the nightcap.
The Yukon, Oklahoma, native is now 17-for-28 at the plate over her last 11 games. In that time, she has driven in 18 runs, scored 12 times, walked on five occasions, hit five home runs and notched four doubles.
OSU's offense stalled at times against the Bulldogs, but a pair of sophomores helped the Pokes keep the pressure on.
Chelsea Alexander, pinch-hitting in the top of the fourth inning, provided the first of the second-half insurance runs for the Cowgirls as she led off the frame with a solo home run to left-center field. It was the speedy outfielder's first home run of the year and the third of her career.
Sydney Pennington nearly followed her effort in the top of the seventh, but had to settle for an RBI double to the gap in left center. Pennington 2-for-3 with a walk against Samford, marking her fourth consecutive multi-hit contest.
That streak was Pennington's longest of the season, and one game shy of her career best multi-hit stretch.
In the circle, Samantha Clakley handled starting duties for the second-straight outing after earning her fourth win of the year against Central Arkansas Thursday night. Clakley pitched a seven-inning gem, shutting out the Bulldogs and walking none in the Pokes' 8-0 victory.
It was the eighth time that Clakley has pitched at least seven innings in her Cowgirl career, and the first time she has done so in 2019.
The Cowgirls got off to a hot start again in the nightcap against Ole Miss, with the first four batters of the game scoring in an early rally that was capped by Factor's second three-run home run of the day. OSU was held in check by Ole Miss starter Molly Jacobsen after that though, as the Pokes managed just three more hits and struck out 11 times against the Rebels' left-hander.
Ole Miss used three big innings to flip the scoreboard in its favor, scoring three runs in the bottom of the second, two in the bottom of the fourth and adding some insurance runs with three more in the bottom of the fifth.
OSU is now 10-4 against teams either ranked or receiving votes this year, with five of those wins coming against top-25 opponents.
The Cowgirls will wrap up their three-game weekend in Oxford Sunday evening with a second matchup against Ole Miss. First pitch is set for 4 p.m. CT on SEC Network+.
