LOS ANGELES – Oklahoma State completed a winning weekend at the Dodger Stadium College Baseball Classic on Sunday as the Cowboys claimed a 3-2 victory over 16th-ranked Michigan in 10 innings at Dodger Stadium.
With the win, the Cowboys finished with two wins in its three tourney games and improved to 9-5 on the season. Michigan is now 9-4 on the year.
Brady Basso picked up the win with 1 1/3 scoreless innings in relief, while Ben Leeper struck out the side in the 10th to earn his third save.
Offensively, OSU tallied just six hits, with Colin Simpson posting a 3-for-4 day and driving in a run, and Trevor Boone homering for the second time this season.
After five of OSU's first batters of the game struck out, Boone got the offense on track to open the third inning as he smashed a solo home run to left field, his second round tripper in as many days, to put the Cowboys up 1-0.
In what proved to be a pitcher's duel between starters Joe Lienhard and Jeff Criswell, who struck out 12 in six innings for UM, the Cowboys added another run in the sixth. After Hueston Morrill drew a one-out walk, Andrew Navigato singled. Up next, Simpson ripped an RBI single to right field to give OSU a 2-0 advantage.
After shutting out the Wolverines over the first five innings, Lienhard gave up his lone run in the sixth. Following a triple by Dominic Clementi to left field that Carson McCusker lost in the sun and had deflect off his glove, Jordan Nwogu singled to cut the OSU lead to 2-1.
But Parker Scott came out of the bullpen and recorded the final two outs of the inning to keep OSU on top. Scott's appearance was his first since March 12, 2017 due to injuries, and the southpaw worked one scoreless inning with a strikeout.
The Pokes also got a solid outing on the mound from Logan Gragg. The righty relieved Scott in the seventh with a pair of Wolverines in scoring position and just one out and struck out the next two batters to get out of the jam and keep the OSU lead intact.
Gragg tallied three strikeouts in 1 1/3 of work, but with two outs in the eight, Nwogu took the OSU pitcher deep for his first homer of the year to tie the score at 2-2.
The game remained tied after nine innings and due to travel curfews, only the 10th inning would be played.
That was all the Cowboys needed.
Alix Garcia led off the OSU 10th with a single and following an out, the Cowboys loaded the bases on a walk to Navigato and a Simpson single. Up next, Christian Funk worked a full count before drawing an RBI walk on the eight pitch of the at-bat to put the Pokes back on top for good.
OSU returns to action Tuesday with the first of four games at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium this week as the Cowboys host Missouri State. A weekend series with Southeastern Louisiana begins Friday.
