STILLWATER – Oklahoma State won its third-third-straight midweek game Tuesday as the Cowboys defeated Missouri State, 13-2, at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.
Six different Cowboys collected RBIs, and Brett Standlee recorded a win in his first-career start as OSU improved to 10-5 on the season.
Trevor Boone led the Cowboys at the plate as he continued his recent tear with a two-home run, five-RBI day; the five RBIs are a career high while the junior has now gone deep in three consecutive contests and is 10-for-19 over his last five games. Cade Cabbiness also homered and had three hits, while Hueston Morrill and Andrew Navigato drove in two runs apiece.
Standlee was superb on the mound, tossing seven scoreless innings and racking up a career-high eight strikeouts. The redshirt freshman allowed just six hits, all singles, and walked two in improving to 2-0 on the season.
Back-to-back home runs gave the Cowboys a lead that they wouldn't relinquish in the bottom of the second. Bryce Carter started the two-out rally with a double to right-center field before Boone stepped into the box and sent a laser over the left-wall. Cabbiness then followed suit with his first home run of 2019 to extend the OSU lead to 3-0.
Two innings later, Boone jump started another big inning with his second two-run rocket over the 1959 NCAA Championship sign in left field. The Pokes would tack on two more runs in the frame thanks to sac flies from Morrill and Navigato.
With OSU leading 8-0, Missouri State (3-11) finally got on the scoreboard in the eighth inning as the Bears plated a pair of runs off Tanner Sparks, who made his first-career appearance when he relieved Standlee to start the eighth inning.
After recording the first two outs, Sparks walked the next three Bears before hitting Brooks Zimmerman with a pitch to bring home MSU's first run of the day. Logan Gragg came in from the pen and limited the damage to two runs to keep OSU in control.
OSU would get those two runs back and then some in the bottom half of the eighth as they rallied for five runs on five hits. Morrill, Colin Simpson and Christian Funk all had RBI doubles in the inning, while Navigato also drove in a run with a single.
Next up for the Cowboys is a three-game series against Southeastern Louisiana at Reynolds Stadium, with the opener scheduled for Friday at 6 p.m.
