STILLWATER – Oklahoma State was dominant on the mound and at the plate Friday night as the Cowboys defeated Southeastern Louisiana, 9-0, in the weekend series opener at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.
Three Cowboy pitchers combined to hold the Lions to just one hit on the night, and Trevor Boone continued his hot hitting as OSU improved to 11-5 with its second shutout of the season.
Jensen Elliott, Peyton Battenfield and Ben Leeper combined for the one-hitter, which was OSU's first since March 14, 2017 against New Mexico. It was the 37th one-hit performance in program history and only the eighth in a nine-inning game. It also marked the 14th combined one-hitter in OSU history.
Boone finished the contest with three doubles, the first Cowboy to reach that mark in a game since Donnie Walton did it on Feb. 22, 2014. OSU's junior center fielder was 3-for-4 with four RBIs on the night, extending his hitting streak to six games during which he's 13-for-23 with 14 RBIs at the plate
Making his fifth start of the season, Elliott held the Lions (6-11) without a hit over the first five innings as OSU built a 2-0 lead with runs in the third and fourth innings.
Boone led off the third with a double down the right-field line to notch the Cowboys' first hit of the game, and Cade Cabbiness followed with a perfectly placed sacrifice bunt to move Boone to third. That brought up Max Hewitt, who plated the first run of the game for the Pokes on an RBI groundout.
OSU pushed across its second run of the contest when Colin Simpson followed a leadoff triple by Andrew Navigato with an RBI groundout to the right side of the diamond to make the score 2-0 after four innings.
SELA recorded its lone hit when Nathan Pilutti led off the sixth with single through the left side off Elliott, who finished his night with seven shutout innings to improve to 2-0 on the season.
In the seventh, Elliott pitched his way out of a jam after walking two Lion batters with one out then inducing a pair of ground balls to get out of the inning unscathed.
OSU tallied its third run on an RBI double by Boone in the seventh before the Cowboys erupted for six runs on five hits in the eighth to put the game away. Cabbiness and Bryce Carter had RBI hits in the inning while Boone provided the big blow when he doubled with the bases loaded to bring home all three baserunners.
Battenfield and Leeper pitched perfect eighth and ninth innings, respectively, to keep the shutout and one-hitter intact.
The two teams will be back in action Saturday with first pitch set for 2:05 p.m. at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.
