The Basics
The Cowgirl tennis team looks to bounce back from consecutive losses last weekend at Arkansas and at home to No. 8 UCLA, marking the first time in two years they've dropped back-to-back duals. The Cowgirls earned a spot in the Team Indoor Championships following the ITA Kick-Off Weekend where they defeated two top-25 programs in Virginia and Kansas. The Cowgirls departed Wednesday afternoon for Seattle, where play begins Friday. The Pokes drew No. 2 North Carolina in the first round, marking the third opponent the team has faced in the top seven and fourth in the top 11. Undefeated players Sofi Blanco and Marnia Guinart were forced to default matches against UCLA, which marked both players' first losses on the year.Â
Â
Tarheels Footnotes
North Carolina women's tennis comes in at No. 3 in the Oracle/ITA Division I rankings this week, as well as in the USTA polls. The Tarheels are 6-0 on the season with their most recent win coming over second-ranked Vanderbilt. The team boasts five ranked players with four landing among the top 20. One Tarheels tandem lands in the Feb. 6 rankings at No. 5 (Cameron Morra and Makenna Jones).Â
Â
Tournament Notes
There is no easy draw in the ITA National Women's Team Indoor Championships, and the Cowgirls land second-seeded North Carolina in the first round. Also on OSU's half of the bracket are No. 16 Ohio State, No. 7 Pepperdine, No. 10 Syracuse, No. 15 South Carolina, and two of the three teams the Cowgirls have taken a loss to, No. 4 Duke and No. 8 UCLA. If the Cowgirls advance past UNC, the next match scheduled is at 5:30 p.m. CST on Saturday against the winner of UCLA and South Carolina.Â
Â
Cowgirl Quick Hits
The Cowgirls return three seniors who helped lead OSU to the second round of the NCAA Tournament last spring, each playing a key role in the team's success. The tournament appearance marked the seventh straight and fourth consecutive year hosting. It was also the fourth-straight year that the Cowgirls notched 20 wins in a season. They ended the regular season ranked No. 8 and finished second in the Big 12, stretching their streak of weeks in the ITA top 25 to 74.Â
Â
Ranked Cowgirls
In the Feb. 6 ITA singles and doubles rankings., Katie Stresnakova comes in as the highest ranked Cowgirl at No. 22. Guinart is No. 66, and Blanco falls in line at No. 91. The latest ITA team ranking positioned the Cowgirls as the ninth-ranked team in the country, with two ranked doubles tandems.
