Five Cowgirl Equestrian Riders Honored by Big 12
February 27, 2019 | Cowgirl Equestrian
STILLWATER – A total of 13 Oklahoma State student-athletes were honored as recipients of the 2019 Dr. Gerald Lage Academic Achievement Award, the Big 12 Conference announced today.
Coached by Larry Sanchez, the Cowgirl equestrian team produced five of OSU's 13 honorees. The equestrian contingent includes seniors Molly Dunn, Paige Kemper and Sarah Miller and sophomores Megan Donald and Stephanie Helsen.
Miller, a team captain, owns a 5-3-1 record in Horsemanship.
"Every coach wishes they had a Sarah Miller on their team," Sanchez said. "She has a drive and passion that you do not see very often. Sarah is a team captain and takes this role very seriously. She has a very high standard and encourages her teammates to also be the best they can be."
Helsen leads the Reining squad with six wins and has won five of her last six matchups.
"I could not be prouder of Stephanie and what she brings to our program." Sanchez said. "She is dominant in the arena and the classroom and is on track to have another successful season."
Dunn, a graduate student earning her master's degree in accounting, is 2-4 in Equitation over Fences. She earned a Most Outstanding Performer honor with her score of 83 against West Texas A&M in November.
"Molly's approach to her academics is very impressive." Sanchez said. "She is now a graduate student and does a great job balancing her academic endeavors and team commitment."
Kemper is set to graduate with two degrees this spring, one in political science and the other in philosophy.
"Paige has a work ethic second to none," Sanchez said. "Her care and compassion for everything she does is very appreciated by our coaching staff. I am sure going to miss her when she graduates in May."
Donald was a member of the 2017-18 NCEA All-Academic honor roll.
"Megan is what I consider to be an ideal team member," Sanchez said. "She has an incredible work ethic both in the arena and in the classroom and always has a wonderful attitude.
The Dr. Gerald Lage Academic Achievement Award is the Big 12's highest academic honor. In order to be eligible for the accolade, student-athletes must have lettered at least once in their career while maintaining residence at their institution for at least one academic year. The honoree, which can only be recognized once, should have 100 hours of earned credit with a cumulative grade-point average of 3.80 at the time of the nomination.
