Conference Titles, School Records Highlight Day Two of Indoor Championships
February 23, 2019 | Cowboy Cross Country & Track, Cowgirl Cross Country & Track
LUBBOCK, Texas—The Oklahoma State men's track and field team finished fourth and the women's track and field team finished fifth at the Big 12 Indoor Championships on Saturday.
The 400 meters highlighted the second day of competition on the men's side. Ashton Hicks came in second place with a school-record time of 45.60. Based on the national indoor performance list as of Friday, Hicks' performance was the fourth-best in the country this year.
Hicks said he knew he had to run his race.
"I just knew I had to get out in the race and secure the bag," Hicks said. "If someone told me I was going to Nationals two weeks ago, I wouldn't have believed them"
LaKyron Mays finished the race in seventh, earning the Cowboys two team points. Hicks and Mays finished in the top eight in the conference as true freshman.
On the women's side, Molly Sughroue and Sinclaire Johnson won conference championships in the Mile and 1,000 meters, respectively.
Sughroue's title was her third in a row in the event. The last woman other than Sughroue to win a conference title was OSU's Kaela Edwards in 2016. Edwards went on to win the national title in the mile that year.
Sughroue said she wasn't feeling well going into the race, but stuck to her race plan.
"I've been pretty low on iron, so I was nervous," Sughroue said. "I started off pretty slow but I just thought 'I'm going to win this. This is mine.' I went all out in the last 150 meters."
Sinclaire Johnson won her first individual conference championship with the performance. Her time of 2:44.23 set the meet record.
Sinclaire Johnson sat back, leading the chase pack for the first 800 meters of the race. With one lap left, Sinclaire Johnson made her move past Kansas State's Kassidy Johnson and didn't surrender the lead after that pass.
Director of Cross Country and Track and Field Dave Smith said Johnson is a rising superstar and the staff knew that last spring.
"She was not on her best today, but ran really well," Smith said. "To set the meet record when you're not feeling your best is impressive. I'm really excited for her because she won two titles (DMR and 1,000 meters). They're the first of many to come."
Aaliyah Birmingham also had a standout performance for the Cowgirls. She finished in second place, setting the school record in the 60 meters with a time of 7.25. It's the fourth time this season Birmingham has broken the school record in the 60 meters.
Isai Rodriguez finished as the runner-up in the 3,000 meters. He also finished as the runner-up in the 5,000 meters Friday night.
Smith said he was proud of both of his team's efforts
"We came in running on fumes a little bit," Smith said. "They really pulled it together, fought, scraped for every inch and every second. Coming in, I thought we might get eighth on both sides. I thought that was more likely than what happened. That's a testament to the athletes."
