Show Added to List of 2019 Cowgirl Softball Captains

STILLWATER - Samantha Show has always been willing to do anything to win, and she has always done whatever she can to help those around her achieve their goals as well.
The two-way star has always had a fire that is rarely matched by her fellow competitors. That fire is a burning desire for success in everything she does, be it on the field, in the classroom or out in the world.
Show's competitive nature and devotion to success, as well as how she shares that spirit with others, is something that has not been missed by the OSU coaching staff or her Cowgirl teammates. And because of that, team captains Sydney Pennington and Elise LeBeouf nominated Show to join them as leaders of the 2019 squad.
"When I got the text from Sydney (Pennington) and Elise (LeBeouf), I teared up a little bit. It meant a lot to me," Show said. "It's something that I've wanted. I've seen other teams that have captains and just the respect that I have for girls on other teams, knowing that they are their team's captain... It's just really cool."
For head coach Kenny Gajewski, Show's selection as a captain was a welcome decision that he felt was overdue.
"Frankly, when we had the captains assigned earlier, I should've made her a captain at that point. You look back and there's reasons you do things, but I'm just glad that this team recognized that and took care of it," Gajewski said. "She has earned it from day one here. She has never wavered on her commitment, her effort, or her coaching of her teammates. I think when you see that she joined a new program, and that fact that she has earned it, that tells you a lot about her."
The weight of donning the 'C' on her jersey is not one Show takes lightly. She knows that, more than anything, her captaincy is a recognition of the leader she has always tried to be, even when there wasn't an extra letter opposite a Nike checkmark on her uniform.
"I haven't changed - I'm the same me," Show said. "I go out and try to help my team in the same way. It didn't affect me this (past) weekend, having that 'C' on my chest. I knew what I had to do for the team."
During her first week as a Cowgirl captain, Show batted .313 at the plate and hit two doubles to go along with a pair of walks at the St. Pete/Clearwater Elite Invitational. She also post a 2.15 earned run average in 13 innings pitched, which included a one-run, complete-game outing that allowed for the Cowgirls to defeat California, 4-1, on Feb. 16.
Her efforts as a pitcher, hitter and fielder helped Oklahoma State bounce back from a pair of losses and win its final three games of the Florida tournament.
Gajewski has often praised the senior for the edge and tenacity she brings to the OSU dugout, something the Cowgirls' coach felt was needed for OSU to reach the next level. That fire can get Show into trouble at times, as she is the spitting image of what it means to wear one's heart on one's sleeve.
For every roar-inducing fist pump after an inning-ending strikeout, there is a flash of fury after her bat misses a riseball up in the zone. It's a roller coaster of emotions on display at all times, but it's something Show has learned to embrace and improve upon during her brief time with Gajewski and staff.
"Things might not always go her way, and she has some bad moments like everyone, but we all have our areas that we've got to get stronger in and she's addressed that," Gajewski said. "There's still those moments where it gets her, but I have a hard time faulting kids who want to win. We do some crazy things when we want to win. You'll do anything. We need more kids that want to do anything to win, and she has led the charge in that deal. I think it's kind of cool that her teammates chose her, and the other captains chose that.
"She deserves it as much as anybody on this team."
Show, her fellow captains, and the rest of the Cowgirl clan are set to begin their third week of the regular season tomorrow, as they take part in the 2019 Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic in Cathedral City, California. There, OSU will face No. 14/13 Arizona, No. 13/15 Arizona State, Colorado State, RV/RV North Carolina and San Diego State in a five-game weekend out in the Golden State.
