19 Cowboys Excelling In Pro Ball Across The Globe
February 15, 2019 | Cowboy Basketball
Cowboy basketball has a rich history in the NBA. From defensive stalwarts like Marcus Smart and Tony Allen, to Bryant "Big Country" Reeves manning the middle for the Vancouver Grizzlies, fans are familiar with professional Pokes.
However, some may not realize that the professional careers of many Cowboys are flourishing in other countries as well.
According to EuroBasket.com, there are 19 former Cowboys playing with professional teams across the globe. Three players (Marcus Smart, Jeffrey Carroll and Jawun Evans) are improving their games in the NBA and the NBA G League.
Smart, who left OSU in 2014, has carved out a "3-and-D" role with the Boston Celtics, as he is shooting a career-high 35.5 percent from three this season, while playing in all but one game.
After two seasons with OSU, Evans is in his second professional season and has earned multiple NBA call-ups after thriving against G-League competition with the Northern Arizona Suns.
The most recent Cowboy of the three, Jeffrey Carroll, is also logging minutes in the NBA G League with the South Bay Lakers after spending the NBA preseason with the Los Angeles Lakers.
Carroll is hardly the only Cowboy from 2018 that is playing professional ball. Tavarius Shine is currently the starting small forward for BC Lulea, which is a professional club in Sweden that is 21-8 this season. Yankuba Sima, the Spanish big man that spent one year in Stillwater, is playing in his home country of Spain with BAXI Manresa. And finally, Kendall Smith, who was a redshirt senior that transferred to OSU for his final year of eligibility in 2018, is currently starting for the Crelan Okapi Aalstar team in Belgium and is the team's third leading scorer this season.
Le'Bryan Nash, Anthony Allen and Chris Olivier are all playing for different teams across Asia and are either at, or near the top when it comes to leading their teams in scoring.
James Anderson and Markel Brown, who both spent multiple seasons in the NBA, are currently playing with separate clubs in Turkey, along with Marshall Moses who last played for OSU in 2011.
Three Cowboys that last played for OSU in 2015 have all signed deals with professional teams overseas as well. Michael Cobbins is currently playing in a Croatian league; Anthony Hickey is playing for the Cretan Kings in Greece; and Marek Soucek is playing in his home country of the Czech Replublic.
Oklahoma State is also being represented in Qatar via Jeff Newberry, who is averaging 21.7 points per game with his club. Meanwhile, both Leyton Hammonds and Marcus Dove are starting for their respective teams in Hungary and France. Brian Williams, who last played for OSU in 2014, is currently the only Cowboys playing in Slovakia.
Whether in the NBA or in another continent, Cowboy basketball is being shown off on the professional stage far and wide.
