Cowboy Quick Hits
No. 2 Oklahoma State wrestling (13-0, 8-0 Big 12) has defeated eight top-25 opponents this season, with two top-five contests remaining on its schedule. The first will be held this weekend in Columbia, Mo. as the Cowboys take on the Tigers. The starting 10 for OSU all picked up wins last week against Air Force. According to the Intermat rankings, Daton Fix and Derek White garner the Pokes' highest positions again this week at No. 2 in their respective weight classes. Chandler Rogers (165) and Preston Weigel (197) returned to the lineup against last week, both notching decisions over the Falcons.Â
Â
The Basics
The Pokes travel to Columbia, Mo. on Feb. 16, to take on the fifth-ranked Tigers and close out their road schedule. Missouri has won 35 straight duals, dating back to 2014. This week's NWCA/USA Today DI Coaches poll positions the Cowboys at No. 2, with Penn State in the first-place spot. The Cowboys have a ranked wrestler at nine weights, with eight of those landing in the top 10 and four of those among the top five. Missouri is 15-0 on the year with six wins over top-25 opponents, with its best win coming over No. 8 Cornell at the South Beach Duals in December.Â
Meeting of Undefeateds
Missouri and OSU are two of the remaining four unbeaten teams in NCAA DI wrestling this season. The programs have a combined 28 wins on the season, with half of those coming against ranked opponents. Between the two projected starting lineups, there are 16 top-25 wrestlers competing in Saturday's dual. As it stands today, the Cowboys' final two dual contests match them up with undefeated teams.Â
Â
Top-10 BoutsÂ
Daton Fix is set to wrestle his team-leading ninth ranked opponent this season against Mizzou's No. 10 John Erneste on Saturday. Erneste is 14-3 this season with one of those losses coming against Lehigh. No. 5 Kaden Gfeller faces his seventh ranked opponent this season in No. 7 Brock Mauller. Gfeller has beaten as high as the No. 6 ranked 149-pounder and looks to add another top-10 opponent to the list this weekend. Sixth-ranked Joe Smith has another test this week at 174 pounds against second-ranked Daniel Lewis. Smith is 1-3 against ranked opponents this season, and Lewis is coming off an upset over Arizona State's Zahid Valencia.
