2019 Cowboy Baseball: The Pitching Staff, Pt. 2

The 2019 baseball starts this week, with Oklahoma State opening play at UT Rio Grande Valley on Friday. The Cowboys are ranked as high as 16^th in the preseason national polls.

OSU is coming off a 31-26-1 season in which the Cowboys finished second in the Big 12 Conference and earned an NCAA Regional berth for the sixth consecutive year under head coach Josh Holliday.

With the '19 season right around the corner, we're breaking down the OSU roster by position. We continue today with our second installment on the pitching staff as we highlight the group of Cowboys who have now been in the program for multiple seasons.

Brady Basso, Junior, 6-2, 213, LHP

Pitched in 18 games as a sophomore, including five as a starter
Went 2-5 with a save, posting wins in Big 12 play against TCU and West Virginia
Owns a career 3-5 record with a save in 30 appearances, seven of those as a starter
Has recorded 57 strikeouts in 54 2/3 innings pitched in his career

Peyton Battenfield, Junior, 6-4, 224, RHP

An honorable mention All-Big 12 selection in 2018
Went 2-3 with a pair of saves in a team-high 26 appearances
25 of his outings came in relief
Worked career-high six innings and struck out nine in NCAA Regional final vs. Stetson
Has made 31 career appearances and has 66 strikeouts in 62 innings

Ben Leeper, Junior, 6-0, 194, RHP

Turned in a 1-2 record in 17 appearances in 2018
Had 34 strikeouts in 27 2/3 innings of work a year ago
Missed most of his first two collegiate seasons with injury
Has appeared in 19 games in his career, four as a starter, and has 42 strikeouts in 33 1/3 innings

C.J. Varela, Junior, 5-10, 171, RHP

An honorable mention All-Big 12 performer in 2018
Made 19 appearances, six as a starter, and was 4-0 with a 3.40 ERA
Also tied for the team lead with three saves last season
Is 6-1 with four saves and a 4.03 ERA in 32 career appearances

Parker Scott, Sophomore, 6-1, 171, LHP

Has battled arm injuries for most of his collegiate career and redshirted last season
Pitched in six games, two as a starter, as a freshman in 2017
Named the 2016 Dallas Morning News Pitcher of the Year and was also the 6-6A Pitcher of the Year at Flower Mound High School

Noah Sifrit, Sophomore, 6-0, 195, LHP

A potential two-way player as a pitcher and outfielder
Pitched in 15 games, all in relief, in 2018
Went 2-0 with a 4.32 ERA and a save

Tanner Sparks, Redshirt Freshman, 6-0, 184, RHP

Redshirted with an injury in 2018
A 2017 All-American at Shawnee High School
Helped lead the Wolves to three consecutive Class 5A state championships

Brett Standlee, Redshirt Freshman, 6-4, 225, RHP

Did not pitch in 2018
A candidate for OSU's closer role this season
Turned in a 20-7 career record at Jenks High School and also posted 226 strikeouts as a prep
