December 06, 2019 | Cowgirl Soccer
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Oklahoma State's coaching staff has been named the 2019 United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division I Midwest Region Staff of the Year.
The United Soccer Coaches Midwest Region includes the programs from the Big 12, Mid-American, Missouri Valley and Southland conferences.
Along with 15th-year head coach Colin Carmichael, associate head coach Justin Elkington, assistant coach Karen Hancock, volunteer assistant Michael O'Hare and strength & conditioning coach Mallory Fowlkes helped the Cowgirls achieve an impressive level of success and long list of accomplishments in 2019.
OSU finished with a 16-3-3 record, with the win total ranking as the fifth highest in a season in program history. The Cowgirls claimed a Big 12 Conference regular season championship with a 7-1-1 mark in league play and also advanced to the second round of the NCAA Women's Soccer Championship.
Picked to finish seventh in the league standings in a preseason vote of the Big 12's head coaches, OSU went 0-1-1 on the opening weekend of conference play before reeling off seven consecutive wins to claim its second Big 12 championship in the last three years. The Cowgirls outscored their opponents 21-7 in conference play.
OSU entered the national rankings in mid-September and maintained a spot in the rankings for 12 consecutive weeks, climbing as high as No. 9 on Nov. 5.
The Cowgirls finished 10-0-1 on their home field in 2019, marking just the seventh time in program history OSU has finished a season unbeaten at home, and each of OSU's losses on the year came against nationally ranked teams — to Kansas and Santa Clara on neutral fields and on the road at Texas Tech.
OSU was dominant on both sides of the pitch in 2019 as the Cowgirls outscored their opponents 50-18. They led the Big 12 in goals and goals allowed and posted 10 shutouts, the fifth most in a season in program history.
The Cowgirls produced five All-Big 12 performers, the second most in program history, and Carmichael was named Big 12 Coach of the Year for a record sixth time. Additionally, OSU had four players named all-region, and Kim Rodriguez became the fifth All-American in program history.
The OSU coaching staff will be honored along with the other Regional Staff of the Year winners at the College Coaches Awards Reception in Baltimore on Jan. 16, 2020. In addition, the Regional Staff of the Year recipients will be placed on the ballot for National Staff of the Year consideration, with the winner of that award being announced on Dec. 20.
