OSU Track Brings Home Four Individual Titles From Lawrence
December 06, 2019 | Cowboy Cross Country & Track, Cowgirl Cross Country & Track
LAWRENCE – The Oklahoma State track teams kicked off their seasons this afternoon in Lawrence, Kansas, at the Bob Timmons Challenge. The Cowboys and Cowgirls produced four individual champions, as Ryan Roane won the women's long jump, Juan Diego Castro won the men's 1,000 meters, and Hannah Bradford and Torrey Hickel each took home shot-put titles.
Roane started her afternoon with a third-place finish in the triple jump before winning the long jump with a mark of 5.68 meters. Freshman Saara Hakanen finished as the runner-up to Roane in her debut meet as a Cowgirl.
Three Cowgirls placed inside the top five in the weight throw. Jocelen Ruth led the way with her runner-up finish, while Baylor Nelson and Hannah Bradford finished third and fourth-place. Bradford went on to win the shot put and Jocelen Ruth placed third.
"Torrey Hickel competed well. He felt like he left some big throws on the table but he was able to come out and give us a indicator that he is on the right path," assistant coach Josh Langley said. "Jocelen Ruth looked much better in the weight throw and hopefully she can get back into that All-Big 12 form that she had a few years ago."
Megan Mann finished third for the Cowgirls in the 60-meter hurdles, followed by Bailey Golden in fifth place. Golden also finished fourth place in the high jump. In the 600-yard race, freshmen Jayden Fiebiger and Madison Savoy finished third and fourth-place, respectively, in their first races donning America's brightest orange.
Three Cowgirls finished inside of the top five in the 1,000 meters. Freshman Gael De Coninck led the way, finishing third in her first race as a Poke while teammates Kaylee Oyler and freshman Emily Forster finished on her heels in fourth and fifth-place, respectively.
For the Cowboys, Garrett Calhoun finished as the runner-up in the 1,000 meters to his teammate Castro and Nick Kenville placed fourth. In the pole vault, 2018 outdoor All-American Blake Scott finished fourth for the Pokes and freshman Jack Fling placed eighth.
"We saw some encouraging performances today. One that stood out was Juan Diego Castro," Langley said. "I thought he ran well in the 1,000 meters and then came back and ran a great opening leg on the 4x400."
Three Cowboy sprinters cracked the top-10 in the 600-yard race. Freshman DeJuana McArthur led the way with a fourth-place finish, Kobe Christiansen crossed the line in seventh place and freshman Tanner Blackmore rounded out the top-10.
"There were multiple kids who came out with personal-bests in their events and that's great for this time of year," Langley said. "We also had some athletes who walked away disappointed with their result, but it's so early in the season that there is plenty of time to head back to campus and make some corrections in practice to fix it."
The Pokes are off until the new year, but they will be back in action on January 17 in Fayetteville, Arkansas, at the Arkansas Invitational.
