Pair of Cowgirls Aim for All-American Finishes in Terre Haute
November 21, 2019 | Cowgirl Cross Country & Track
THE BASICS
The Oklahoma State Cowgirls and Cowboys cross country teams turned in fourth and fifth-place finishes, respectively, at the NCAA Midwest Regional in Stillwater on November 15. The Cowgirls just missed earning an at-large bid to the NCAA Championships as a team, but qualified two individuals as Taylor Somers and Molly Born both punched their tickets to Terre Haute. Somers was the Big 12 runner-up in Waco on November 2, and again finished as the runner-up at the regional meet to earn an automatic bid to nationals. Born finished sixth overall and earned an at-large bid to join her teammate at the national meet. The duo of Somers and Born, along with Kaytlyn Larson, were named to the all-region team for their finishes. The Cowboys also had two individuals earn all-region status, as Ryan Smeeton finished 15th and Adam Dayani finished 19th. Back on November 2, the Cowgirls claimed their second Big 12 team title in school history, edging Texas by two points. Somers was the runner-up and Born finished third in that race to lead the Cowgirls.
DYNAMIC DUO
The duo of Taylor Somers and Molly Born has finished every race this season inside the top-10. Both Cowgirls have made significant strides of improvement over the past year. After a 24th-place finish at the NCAA Regional meet in 2018, Somers jumped 22 spots to earn her runner-up finish last Friday. Born was 51st at the regional meet last year and made a leap of 45 spots to place sixth this year.

FROM TAYLOR SOMERS
On running at the font with Molly all season:
"It's been awesome to look over during the race and see Molly right there. We've been able to work off of each other. We work out together and have put in a lot of miles together, so when I look over and see her I know I'm capable of running right there next to her. We've really been able to work off of each other and just push each other to the finish line."
On her goals for Saturday:
"My goal is definitely to finish as an All-American. We've both been top-10 in every race this season, so we should both have a shot at breaking the top-40 at nationals and that would be great for the both of us and our program."
FROM Â MOLLY BORN
On having a teammate to run with:
"It really is a team sport and you need that team aspect, especially mid-race when you're feeling it, it's really good to have a teammate. So, I'm so happy Taylor is going to be there with me."
