Â
STILLWATER – Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy met with members of the media Monday at Boone Pickens Stadium to preview the Cowboys' conference matchup against TCU in Stillwater this Saturday. A look at some of his comments:
Â
Opening Statement:
"We played well. Defensively, we made big plays in the fourth quarter. We won the turnover battle and minimized penalties and it gave us the best chance to win. I was really proud of our team. We are back to work. The guys were in a good frame of mind last night and had good practice. We are looking forward to the next one where we are playing probably the best defense we've seen all year. They are really good on defense, solid up front. Maybe the best front six that I can remember them having. I think they have NFL players in the secondary. This will be a real challenge for our team but we are excited and looking forward to it. Their offense has been playing better. Their quarter has been playing better with a little more experience. Obviously, we need to know where Jalen Reagor is, he is a difference-maker and a really special talent. Looking forward to the week and looking forward to playing on Saturday afternoon."
Â
On TCU Head Coach Gary Patterson:
"I know him pretty well. He's gone back to his traditional style now. He experimented with a little three-down defense last year, might have been because of injuries. We don't have football conversations, obviously, we have a lot of good conversations because we get along really well. He has gone back to what I think he believes in. I'm sure he knows that they are really good inside and that backer can run and make a lot of plays. So we have a good feel for them. He knows us too, I don't think there are any secrets there. We know each other really well. I have a lot of respect for him as a football coach. I don't think there is anybody in the country that has a better defensive mind than him. When it comes to being a defensive coach, he is as good as anybody in the country. The one issue you see on tape with them is that they don't miss tackles. In my opinion, that's why they are playing well. They are extremely good against the rush. We will have to have a really good plan and work hard."
Â
On how a big win affects the team:
"I try to instill in the players, coaches and the organization from day one that we play 12 one game seasons. Everybody in the country works hard all week, coaches work long hours and players work their butts off. On Saturday, you either feel good about the game or you don't. Then on Sunday, you have to go back to work. You can't get too high on one or get too low on another because it will certainly affect your next game. Hopefully, our players understand that. I think that if you look back over the history of this program, once it's been up and running in the last ten or twelve years, we've been pretty sound coming off tough losses or big wins. Then there are times we haven't done very well and I don't have the answer for that either. We don't break our routine. We do the same thing."
Â
On Tylan Wallace's athletic abilities:
"First thing is that he's not scared. You don't see that a lot in today's game. Considerably fewer players now are willing to throw their body at somebody else. It's just a different generation when it comes to that. He's extremely physical, he's not scared and he's explosive. He's going to have a really good vertical jump and he's an explosive type of athlete. Those guys come up on him and he can stiff arm them and he's got great balance. The play that he made Saturday was like Dez Bryant. It looked like something Dez would do back in the day. It's about as good of a play as I've seen in a long time."
Â
On shuffling the offensive line around to match up with TCU:
"It'll be a challenge for them; we're going to have to live up to the challenge. They're going to win some battles and we're going to win some battles. We have to be patient, we have to execute and we have to stay in our game plan. If you watch their inside guys, Ross Blacklock and some of the other guys in there, they're really explosive athletes. We'll have to have a really solid plan and they're going to win some battles. When you compete against guys that are good players, they're going to make a few plays."
Â
On Dylan Galloway coming back from injury:
"He did pretty well. I think he played better than what he thought he would and what we thought he would. He felt good at practice last night, which was a good sign."
Â
On Tyler Lacy being back:
"He gives us some experience. He wasn't completely healthy but he made it through the game. He should be better for this week and that's a big lift for our defense."
Â
On spreading the offense around:
" When we go in, everybody here knows that Chuba Hubbard is touching the ball too much. 30 times a game. I think he only touched the ball 24 times against Iowa State and that was better. When you have players that are as good as those guys are, you want them to touch the ball 25 times. Then you want Wallace to catch the ball eight to 10 times a game because those guys give you a good chance to win the game. You feel pressured to get them the ball, but you also have to understand that the oppnent can take it away from us to a certain extent. They can overload the box. You can just say you're going to run through them, but the math part of football says no. They can cover down on him, put a safety over the top of him, then everyone else has to get activated."
