In the Rankings
Oklahoma State is not ranked this week. Entering 2019, OSU had reached the top 15 of the AP poll at some point in 10 of the past 11 seasons. OSU had also seen a top 10 ranking in the AP poll at some point in eight of the past 11 seasons. Iowa State is ranked No. 23 in the AP poll and is one spot out of the coaches' rankings.
The Series
Saturday's game marks the 54th meeting between Oklahoma State and Iowa State, with the series dating back to 1926. The 2019 season also marks the ninth consecutive year the teams have met. OSU owns a 31-19-3 all-time series advantage, including a 14-12-1 advantage in games played in Ames. OSU has won eight of the past 10 matchups, including three straight in Ames. A win Saturday would mark the longest road win streak for the Cowboys in the history of the series. Coach Mike Gundy is 8-3 in his career against Iowa State, while ISU coach Matt Campbell is 1-2 in his career against OSU.
Oklahoma State from a Distance
Oklahoma State is 4-3 overall and 1-3 in Big 12 play, and Saturday's game will mark OSU's fourth ranked opponent in its past five games. The story of the season so far has been the emergence of Heisman Trophy candidate Chuba Hubbard, who leads the nation in nearly every statistical rushing category, including rushing yards, rushing touchdowns, rushing yards per game, all-purpose yards, yards after contact (via Pro Football Focus), yards per carry (min. 140) and more. His average of 180.7 rushing yards per game is 42.4 more than second-place A.J. Dillon of Boston College. For perspective, the spread between first place and second place is larger than the spread between second place and 28th place. Hubbard's rushing yards through seven games are better than three of the past four running backs to win the Heisman, and are also better than any OSU player since Barry Sanders' historic Heisman season in 1988. OSU wide receiver Tylan Wallace is also making a case to repeat as a first team All-American and Biletnikoff Award finalist, if not more. Wallace is sixth nationally with 772 receiving yards this season and he has more yards, catches and touchdowns now than he did through seven games last season. Defensively, the Cowboys have held their past three opponents to a combined 6-of-35 (17.1%) on third down tries. That ranks No. 1 in the FBS over the past four weeks. Linebackers Amen Ogbongbemiga and Malcolm Rodriguez have been the individual standouts, as both rank among the top six tacklers in the Big 12. On special teams, Matt Ammendola ranks third among all active players in the FBS with 311 career points scored. At 10-for-10 on the year, he's one of only four kickers in the country who has attempted 10 or more field goals and converted at a 100 percent rate this season.
