STILLWATER – The Oklahoma State softball team stays undefeated and extends its Fall Ball win streak to six with a win over the Cowley County Community College Tigers 19-2 on Wednesday in Stillwater.
OSU's offense exploded and racked up 22 total hits in the 10-inning contest. The Cowgirls crushed five home runs on the night and seven players registered multiple hits. Along with its domiance at the plate, OSU's pitching also overpowered the Tigers' hitters, holding the opposing lineup to just two runs on five hits.
"It was a good game," Head Coach Kenny Gajewski said. "Kelly Maxwell was great again; she's been great all fall. I thought she got us on the right start. "Offensively, we're starting to make that turn. We're putting together some better at-bats, some hard outs and that's what good hitters do."
The Cowgirls offensive outpour was headlined by a five-run second inning in which three Cowgirls – Karli Petty, Hayley Busby and Alysen Febrey – each blasted a home run. Maci Cunconan and Kiley Naomi also homered in the seventh to contribute to the best offensive game for OSU this fall.
"I felt like today I hit very well," Petty said. "Everything was going well for me. I barely hit that home run over, but it's a home run so I will take it."
The Tigers were overmatched as soon as Maxwell stepped into the circle to start for OSU. Maxwell struck out eight of the 10 batters she faced in her three-inning appearance. In her last nine innings pitched, Maxwell has tallied an outstanding 25 strikeouts.
"I went out and executed the pitches and focused on each pitch to attack the strike zone," Maxwell said. "We had a really good week of practice, so coming off that, we knew we wanted to go right after them."
Logan Simunek and Carrie Eberle made relief appearances, combining for seven strikeouts and surrendered just four hits.
As Oklahoma State's Fall Ball schedule winds down, the Cowgirls will face Seminole State College Oct. 23 in Cowgirl Stadium at 5:30 p.m.
