Cowgirls shutout MSU, Extend Winning Streak
October 13, 2019 | Cowgirl Softball
STILLWATER – The Oklahoma State softball team earned its fifth straight win of Fall Ball with a 12-0 shutout win against the Midwestern State Mustangs on Sunday in Stillwater.
The Cowgirls' strong start in the circle ignited its offensive performance throughout the afternoon.
"Overall, solid day," Coach Kenny Gajewski said. "I thought we had some kids who swung the bat a little better today. We just have to keep going. We're looking forward to a good week of practice. Our at-bats have got to improve, so we're going to focus on that this next week. Again, the pitching has been really good, so we have to be able to match our kids and the way they pitch with our at-bats. I think this team has a chance to be very, very special."
Gabby Sprang started for OSU and pitched five shutout innings, allowing only four hits while tallying three strikeouts.
"I was working off the pitches coach was calling," Sprang said. "I was just trying to be out there for my team. I like being out there longer because I feel like the longer you're out there, the better you get."
OSU matched Sprang's solid performance with five runs in the second, the most runs scored in a single inning for the Cowgirls this fall. On the day, nine Cowgirls combined for 11 hits and formed a balanced performance offensively at the plate.
Logan Simunek stepped in to relieve Sprang in the sixth and didn't miss a beat. She struck out six batters and allowed just one hit in four innings pitched.
The Cowgirls' offense cooled down a bit after a hot start, but stayed consistent through the game. In the third, Hayley Busby shot a single up the middle to bring Macee Barnes home and advanced Sydney Pennington to second. Pennington later scored on a wild pitch.
In the fifth, Freshman Karli Petty earned her second hit of the game on a hard-hit single into right to plate Shalee Brantley and Barnes. Petty and Busby were the two Cowgirls with multiple hits, each finished with two on the day.
"I really let the ball travel today and made sure I got me and my bat to the ball," Petty said. "I think we did well today. We can always improve on something, but overall, I think we're coming together and getting our hitting together."
Up next, the Cowgirls take on Cowley County Community College on the 16th in Cowgirl Stadium at 5:30 p.m. overall.
