Cowgirls’ Pitching Shines On The Road
October 12, 2019 | Cowgirl Softball
STILLWATER – The Oklahoma State softball team beat the UNT Mean Green 4-1 on Saturday in Denton.
For OSU's first and only road contest in the Fall season, the Cowgirls pitching staff dominated UNT's offense while the their own offense showed flashes of its potential firepower. The trio of Carrie Eberle, Logan Simunek and Kelly Maxwell held the Mean Green to just one run on four hits, while striking out 14. Four games into the Fall, OSU has only allowed nine runs, six of those earned. Offensively, eight different Cowgirls reached base safely for OSU and the offense was highlighted by a three-run sixth.
"Obviously, pitching dominated this game today." Head Coach Kenny Gajewski said. "I saw some good offensive things at times and sometimes it just wasn't as good as we would want to be. We are getting there. We've played some excellent teams up to this point. Just excited about the way we pitched, we played good defense once again. We are on the right path, just need to continue to find the rhythm in our offense."
It was a slow offensive game for both teams in the early going, the lone run in the first three innings was a run-scoring single by UNT off of Eberle in the bottom of the first. It winded up being the only run OSU would surrender the whole.
The Cowgirls knotted the score when the lineup turned over in the top of the fourth. Cleanup hitter Alysen Febrey launched a solo home run over the right field wall to get OSU on the board, this was senior's first long ball as a Cowgirl. Febrey added another RBI in the top of the sixth with a run-scoring groundout that drove in Hayley Busby from third.
"I was out there looking for my pitch on the home run," Febrey said. "I was also more focused on scoring the runner than getting a hit, just more for the team than trying for myself."
Busby, an offseason addition like Febrey, gave OSU the advantage on the scoreboard with a two-run triple down the right-field line. The junior has four RBI in the Fall, tied for first on the team with Sydney Pennington.
"I was just trying to get on base," Busby said. "They were throwing me away all game so I just try to pepper something down the line and I was able to get a triple out of it with my speed."
Next up, OSU returns home for a quick turnaround and hosts Midwestern State (Texas) at 2 p.m. on Sunday.
