Jumps Coach Zivile Pukstiene on the Meet
On what this weekend is about
"Well, we have a small group going there. We're going there to work on our technical aspects. It's always good to compete and see where we're at before big meets. It's a good place to practice."
Â
On not getting bogged down during the season
"We train for the big meets like Big 12s or Nationals, so we treat these other meets as checkpoints. We see where we're at before the big meets. Next week, the jumpers are going to New Mexico, so that's a big checkpoint before Nationals. We think Jacob's mark is good enough to qualify, but we want to cement that and make sure he's going to get into Nationals. The top 16 make it and it's a competitive event at the national level. For now, we're training and that's why we're not sending everybody."
Â
Distance Medley Masters
The OSU women's distance medley relay team opened up at the UW Invitational in Seattle and set a new school record.
Sinclaire Johnson's mile-leg of the race was the highlight of the performance.
She ran the final portion of the race in about 4:30 according to Director of Cross Country and Track and Field Dave Smith.
That mile time would have clocked in as the second-best in school history had it been in a standalone Mile race.
The school-record time of 10:55.93 marks the first time in school history that a Cowgirl DMR squad has run a sub-11 minute time. The mark not only broke OSU's record, but it also broke the UW Invitational record.
In their attempt to qualify for the NCAA Championships, the Cowgirls flourished. They have put themselves in qualifying position early in the season and currently have the nation's best DMR time.
Their performance would have been a world-leading time, but because it came on an oversized track in Seattle, the time doesn't count as the world's best time.
Despite missing out on the world lead, the OSU women are still at the top of the NCAA indoor performance list and will once again be in the mix for a national title come March.
Â
Orange and Black Meets the Junior Championships
Oklahoma State sends four young athletes to the USATF Junior Cross Country Championships on Saturday.
Adam Dayani, Shayan Zarrin, Amanda Mayoral and Rilee Rigdon are set to head to Tallahassee, Florida, to race as some of the nation's best junior cross country runners.
The women's 6K is set to take off at 10 a.m. and the men's 8K is schedule for 10:40 a.m. Both races will be held at Apalachee Regional Park.
Apalachee Regional Park was the host site of the NCAA South Regional in 2018 and is hosting that regional again in 2019 and 2020. The course is also slated to play host to the 2021 NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships.
The small contingent for OSU is made up of four freshman. All four athletes redshirted the cross country season in 2018. The group is getting a preview of the course that hosts the national meet in their junior season of cross country.
The four athletes have combined for 11 appearances so far in the 2019 indoor season and have a total of one win and six top-five finishes.
