Oklahoma State Game Notes
• The Basics
The Oklahoma State family will pay tribute to those tragically lost on Jan. 27, 2001 while welcoming our visitors from the SEC, South Carolina, to Gallagher-Iba Arena on Saturday. The Cowboys will host their annual Remember The Ten game the day before the 18-year anniversary of the tragedy in Colorado. Saturday will also mark the sixth installment of the SEC/Big 12 Challenge. The Big 12 is looking to regain its title after the SEC won the Challenge for the first time in 2018. This will be the third time Oklahoma State and South Carolina have met in the Challenge, after the two split a pair of home games in 2013 and 2014. OSU is 3-2 overall and 2-0 at home in the SEC/Big 12 Challenge.
• On the Air
The matchup will air on ESPNU at 1 p.m. Central. Richard Cross and Robbie Hummel will handle the on-air duties. The webcast is available at ESPN3 or via the WatchESPN app. Dave Hunziker and John Holcomb will have the Cowboy Radio Network call, which can also be heard on TuneIn Radio or on satellite radio Sirius 108 and XM 200.
• Remember The Ten
On Jan. 27, 2001, just hours after a road game at Colorado, tragedy struck the Oklahoma State basketball family when a plane carrying 10 members of the Cowboy program crashed on a snowy night near Strasburg, Colorado. At the memorial service, Oklahoma State made a promise to always remember those lost that night. Memorials were erected in Strasburg and in Gallagher-Iba Arena in Stillwater and every year OSU sets aside a day to "Remember The Ten". Every year, Cowboy fans across the country come to Stillwater to place flowers at the memorial and pay their respects. The OSU Library bells toll 10 times, and a moment of silence is observed as the names of those lost is read aloud prior to the Cowboy basketball game. We will always Remember The Ten: Kendall Durfey, Bjorn Fahlstrom, Nate Fleming, Will Hancock, Daniel Lawson, Brian Luinstra, Denver Mills, Pat Noyes, Bill Teegins and Jared Weiberg.
• The SEC/Big 12 Challenge
This is the sixth installment of the SEC/Big 12 Challenge, and Oklahoma State is 3-2 overall with a perfect 2-0 mark in Stillwater. Last year, Arkansas survived in the last minute against a depleted Cowboy squad in Fayetteville, 66-65, when OSU's tip-in at the buzzer rimmed out. Big 12 teams are 29-21 (.580) in the SEC/Big 12 Challenge. In the first four years of the event, the Challenge trophy remained in the Big 12 office. The Big 12 won it the first three seasons and the leagues split the 10 games in 2017. The SEC won the Challenge for the first time in 2018. This year, Big 12 teams are a combined 7-2 against the SEC.
• The Series With The Gamecocks
This is just fourth meeting overall between South Carolina and Oklahoma State, and the home team has won each of the previous games. This will be the third SEC/Big 12 Challenge matchup between OSU and South Carolina after the two programs split a pair of games in 2013-14 (won 79-52 in Stillwater) and 2014-15 (lost 74-49 in Columbia, South Carolina). Overall, the Gamecock lead the all-time series, 2-1.
• Boynton At USC
Mike Boynton coached the Cowboys to six wins over ranked opponents in 2017-18, but as a player he was a four-year letterwinner for South Carolina from 2001-04. He played in 125 career games, which still ranks seventh in that program's history, and he finished his career in the top ten in three pointers made (129) and three pointers attempted (364). Boynton later returned to the USC coaching staff from 2008-13 where he served under Darrin Horn as an assistant coach and under Frank Martin as a staff assistant.
• Leading The Gamecocks
Frank Martin is in his seventh season at the helm of the South Carolina basketball program. He is a veteran of 240 wins and seven postseason appearances as a head coach overall, including a trip to the Final Four in 2017. Cowboy fans will remember Martin well from his time as the head coach at Kansas State from 2007-12. Overall, Martin is 5-4 in his career against Oklahoma State, including a 1-3 mark in Gallagher-Iba Arena. Both Brad Underwood and Mike Boynton spent time coaching under Martin's tutelage.
