January 22, 2019 | Cowgirl Equestrian
STILLWATER – The Oklahoma State equestrian team gained valuable experience during the fall against some of the nation's top teams. The Cowgirls went on the road to compete with No. 1 Auburn, No. 3 Texas A&M, No. 6 TCU and No. 10 Georgia.
Despite falling in their tough road matchups, the Cowgirls defended Totusek Arena, upsetting No. 3 Baylor, 11-9, and soundly defeating West Texas A&M, 17-3, in Stillwater.
The Cowgirl Reining team is 4-2 so far this season, good for No. 3 in the NCEA. They have signature wins over highly-ranked opponents in Auburn and Baylor. Freshman Hannah Lovrien was instrumental in the Auburn win, recording an event-high 70.5 en route to earning Most Outstanding Performer honors. Junior and team captain Hannah Mitchell earned a pair of fall MOPs, including an event high 71.5 against Baylor.
Mitchell is the team's most decorated member. To name a few of Mitchell's accomplishments in Reining, she's been named an All-American twice, 2017 NCEA Reining Rider of the Year, 2017 Big 12 Reining Rider of the Year, and earned NCEA Rider of the Month honors in October. She finished the fall with a record of 4-1-1.
Hunter DeJane and Stephanie Helsen are 4-2 on the season. Both were key contributors in OSU's upset win over No. 3 Baylor, setting season highs in the comeback win.
Helsen ended the fall season on a hot streak, winning her last three matches, which included wins at Georgia and at TCU.
The Cowgirls resume Big 12 play in Waco on Feb. 9 against Baylor.
